Help with identifying this plant

I found this one and several like it in a bottom. They were about 70yds from the river in an oak bottom. The deer seem to be stomping these pods and eating the round things in them. I’ve never seen them but they are busted all in this bottom had a good doe come in and watched her browse on them. Thanks for the help!

X2, that's definitely an arrowhead plant, ie common arrowhead, duck potatoe, or Indian potatoe. That pod would have turned a bright red or maybe white depending of the type
