@Brocky or anyone with relevant experience, what hitch cord and ring would you recommend for a sticht hitch on 9mm Canyon C-IV? If it makes any difference I plan to add the ring on the twist for self tending ease.

PM Brocky. he'll help you. You'll like that hitch. I'm using 8 Mm Resc. Tech w/ 6mm cord. I thinks it's TRD? Works great.

I’m using 7mm Bluewater for sticht on 9mm HTP. I like it a lot. I have 6mm TRC as well but I don’t like it for that particular hitch as much.

I know the canyon elite is bigger than advertised but I don't think that'll effect ring size. I'm using 7mm on closer to 10mm than 9 in that post. I believe you want 60-80% of mainline diameter for a hitch but I also don't think that's a hard and fast rule, more guidelines.

I've noticed I much prefer a softer hitch cord but I can usually get anything to work, but I'm just a dude on the internet

Edit: consider the soft stitch, one less piece to buy/ fiddle with / clank and only takes a tad more cord. FWIW, I have no experience with eye to eyes

I guess I’ll try both metal and non metal. What size ring are you using with the bluewater?
I’m not lol. I’m doing a soft sticht, uses the cord as its ring integrated within the hitch. If I was going to use a ring I’d go with as small as possible, up to like a 1.5” opening.

I would prefer the integrated soft ring to a metal one if that doesn’t come at a cost of function. Have you used the hitch on a lineman’s or tether and played with self tending for one hand tightening and loosening?

I am using the soft stitch variant on 8mm restec tied with 6mm trc and it functions with ease one handed. I’ve also used it on 9mm htp tied with 7mm Sterling accessory cord and functions with ease as well! Brocky introduced me to this hitch when I asked him to send me the most compact hitch he could think of, this fits the bill perfectly!

I’m using it for rappel with a figure 8 device. Once you dial in your # of wraps up top (I like 5-6 but have used 4 as well) then keep the rest of the hitch as tightly dressed as possible. It has a decent amount of creep before it bites but once it does, release and tending are a non issue.

Can you post a picture of it, shouldn’t be any slipping before grabbing. Also what cord on which rope?

Only pic I have right now but I will take another when I get a chance. Top hitch in the first pic is what I was using, 7mm Bluewater on 9mm HTP, 4 wraps. Bottom pic is same hitch with TRC on HTP, 6 wraps
It wasn’t slipping much until yesterday, I had creep when I went to weight it for rappel and so I gave it an extra wrap and re-dressed it more tightly. 2AE1BE4B-8C78-4DD0-A527-08346E08C479.jpegDC883D43-E3C3-476B-A390-9973EDAE5489.jpegI didn’t like the TRC as much on rappel because it generated a lot of heat but it definitely grabbed well.

Here are some of the re-dressed with a fifth wrap. Unweighted and weighted. 7mm BW on 9mm HTP, one bight through F8 device 57EB061D-D608-43FD-A834-2D49946A2BE4.jpeg4AAFA461-ABD5-47E1-8950-4B6520FC778E.jpeg26D97B71-4C3E-43AE-8494-6A4E62DCF8BB.jpeg59A74040-DF9C-4B66-A928-212796DE59A0.jpegC46E1CE3-B5D6-471B-9ED3-9A6951D39E8B.jpeg

The hardness of the HTP doesn’t allow the cord to squeeze it much causing some of the slipping, I needed five wraps. Your hitch is only crossed once in back, it needs to be crossed twice, this keeps slack in the hitch from moving from the wraps down through the rest of the hitch. Also keep the ring as tight to the wraps as possible, your ring size looks good.

Ahhhhh I wasn’t too sure about my twist in the back…5 wraps really helped but I’m going to retie with that extra twist. So, basically I need the tails to emerge from the back of the hitch on the same side they came from? I think I originally had it this way but for some reason started twisting only once in the back…
As always, thank you!

Edit: went and retied it. I was definitely doing the double twist originally, but when I switched from TRC to BW I must have mentally deleted the second twist. I buttoned my hitch up with the BW and this behaves much better, bites instantly like I remember it doing when I first tried it. Again, thanks Brocky. And sorry to OP for derailing the thread a little.

The C-IV is also stiff, I got the same results when using either rope. The most reliable grabbing cord that I tested was Sterling’s 5.4mm V-TX, dyneeema core and polyester cover. The 6mm Probe was pretty good, but the 7mm VT cord still wanted to slip some, unless tied very tight. The bottom hitch is 6mm Vectran, only needed three wraps.

Of COURSE this post comes the day after I place the order for C-IV and 7mm accessory cord . In all seriousness thanks for dropping the knowledge regardless of timing.

lol 5 wraps with the 7mm and keep it all tight, you’ll be happy as a clam in sand.
Ask Santa for some other cord materials and play with them. I feel like I’m ordering new cord every couple of weeks just to pfutz with the same setup, but I keep coming back to the 7mm for this hitch.
