Homemade Sitdrag

Stepped it up and made my first sitdrag. I have to admit, this sewing thing is fun. I have yet to field test my work, but it looks pretty strong. So here she is. Simple construction. It has three little straps that attach to my RC harness (for walking comfort) and I made it an inch wider than the commercial version. My only complaint about a sitdrag was that I felt it was just a tiny bit too narrow. Hopefully I solved that issue.

Tested it in a tree but felt it was not as comfortable as the original sitdrag. I figured that the webbing had no stretch, while the canvas gave a little. Given the extra inch I added to the width, the issue was more pronounced. Basically, the webbing was digging into my leg a little causing some pinch. I noticed the same issue with guys taking pics of their butts when sitting in the Mantis, but with the Mantis it was even more pronounced.

I decided to sew in some webbing "stabilizers". Yup, problem solved. As comfortable as a lounge chair. Did I just find the solution for the dreaded pinch???? 20190208_154504.jpg

very interesting all you did is add two webbing strips between and it sits comfortable

Yes. Made a huge difference. Think of them as stringers; that's what made me think of it. That saddle sag is gone and it took the pressure off the legs. Just came back from hanging in a tree again. Gave it a good thirty minutes, leaning and sitting. Comfy.

Wasn't a fan of the SD as it felt constricting (likely just my girth) may give it a go with your solutions!

@Sheldon , I never tried a saddle because I am just so comfortable in a sitdrag. I think what makes it work for me is that it is not contoured like a saddle. So I can move it down or up a bit depending on whether I am sitting or leaning. It doesn't force me to have it in a specific spot around my mid section. No issues of it sliding up, something I see some people mention regarding saddles.

It was nice to add just a little bit of width. I did not screw around with the length, but I have a 32 inch waist, so the sitdrag fit just right. The length of cloth just wraps around me perfectly. I would definitely make it wider if I had a larger waist.

Very fun to be able to experiment with my own versions.

BTW where did you get the 2" strap from? Been looking for something similar. TIA

Going to try one with some ballistic nylon and see what happens.

I sold my original SD so have nothing to guide. What are the dimensions you used?

@Recurveaholic , Those are the straps that go into the cam buckles I have sewn on my RC harness. My sitdrag hangs off my harness when I walk. I want to be able to remove my sitdrag because I use the RC harness for scouting.

Great . Also think that the shape has something to do with it. Took some pack cloth and threw on together. Initially I did it without the stringer and suffered the same pinch. Added the PK1234 stringer, that’s what I’ll call it, and added fabric to the center and tapered towards the end to reduce the amount of material bunching up at the bridge loops. Brief testing showed a significant difference pinch wise, if that’s a thing. Forgive that it is a little crude as I was excited and threw it together with some scraps. The pattern is basically the pdf from the DIY Kestrel clone. Digging it so far think there is promise here. Maybe less curved on the top, but that’s for another day gotta clean up my mess.

400D packcloth. Good stuff. Duck canvas is also a good option and easily found anywhere. I cannot recommend enough doing a double layer with a camping pad insert. Oh... and the stringer inserts; they work Pete

@Peterk1234 and @Sheldon what materials did you use for these? Thinking of DIYing a bigger sitdrag or mayb ejust what Sheldon did above. Thinking to use the same material as in hammocks.

When I was first attempting to make a fleece saddle, I almost bought a cheap walmart hammock to use instead of the fleece. The true deciding factor was simply $20 hammock vs. the $2.50 fleece. I can hardly believe no one has done this yet; though, I am thinking of a but hammock and I think you may be thinking of a sitdrag just made with parachute type material?
