From a Google search...
Some sources say ticks can live for 24 hours or one full day without a host, while others say they can live for up to two years without food. The truth is, both could be right, but it depends on the conditions, species of tick and the stage of their lifecycle.

I slid down a beech tree approx. 20' one cold morning long ago.
Thank fully I was young and supple, it felt like my spine was compressed to about a foot long.
Don't ask me about the abandoned power line pole that I tried to climb..........
 
When I was a kid, my Dad had a Baker stand. And he made a copy of it out of thick steel! I got to use that one! It may have weighed more than I did at the time. Hunted from it for several years before safety harnesses were a thing. Then, I used that stand and a chest-only harness for years! Pretty amazing that I lived through my childhood. Thank you Lord!
I'm getting stir crazy here at the Slaughter House (BTW - My last name is Slaughter). Yesterday evening, I was climbing the Maples in the backyard, sawing out dead limbs. Wife and neighbors think I'm crazy.
And back to the OP... yeah ticks are very disgusting.
