How many use tarps instead of tents?

I run a floorless shelter from SeekOutside and LOVE it! I wasn't sure of the floorless thing at first but I have camped in lots of different places now and spent over a week in it in the wyoming backcountry and I love it. Being able to get inside with your boots on and cook without fear of melting a hole in the floor is really nice. It's super light weight too which is awesome. A tarp setup is basically the same thing, just a little smaller.
Which Seek Outside set up did you go with? Did you get the stove also? I camped with a stove in Colorado at 10,500 feet this year in the snow and the stove in the tent was awesome at night. It was my friend's stove and tent so I am now in the market for my own.

I have the Lil Bug Out with base/base and the connecting tarp. I have a 18” Lite Outdoors stove as well but haven’t had a chance to use it other than in my yard. I tested it last winter and had it over 100* in there

Not to start a fight or anything, but I can't wrap my head around avoiding ticks and not using a full enclosure tent or hammock.

Legit concern. I’ve honestly not had a single problem with bugs with the floor less shelter. I do have a bug bivy I use inside for my sleep system that I can close up if needed but I usually run it with the netting open. It’s a very versatile setup!

IMG_1034.JPGI built this shelter just to see if I could if I had to. I left an opening at the top and small vents at the bottom. I had a fireplace in the center. It is about 12' in diameter. Lit the fire and smoked up the whole place until it got going really well. LOL. Then the fire started a draft to the opening in the top and the smoke cleared right out.

I really like that setup with the bugnet.

I love that setup! Normally I just lay my quilt on top of the net at the top with the bottom tucked in to keep everything contained. I'm a huge fan of that type of shelter. Tons of room and very light weight!

My wife and I through-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2013. We lived in a tarp tent together for 5 months. I’ve been considering how to implement my ultralight backpacking gear into my hunting system. Our tarp tent is sort of a combination of a tarp with a bathtub floor and mosquito netting. You have to use trekking poles to set it up, but it weighs in just over 2 pounds. Ours is made by Six Moons Designs. This may be a good option to take a look at. It was a life saver with all the mosquitos we encountered. Would not be good in heavy snow though. I’m 6’5 and fit comfortably inside. Also the double entry and double vestibules were great for storing gear. Zpacks is making some great stuff as well as TarpTent. May be worth checking out.

Hey guys. If you're looking for an affordable shelter and dont want to fork out close to a grand to do it, this is for you. I researched this type of shelter for a long time and came up with https://luxe-hiking-gear.com Tent with a stove jack $315 plus shipping. They have 5 of the Gstoves in stock as of today. These stoves are extremely hard to get a hold of. Here is my setup. I made my own bathtub floor out of a regular tarp and made a few mods to it. The tent is a high quality, non stretch tent which is unlike a ripstop fabric which stretches. Absolutely waterproof, windproof and made for bad weather. Jake is the owner and very pleasurable and informative to deal with. I don't get anything for promoting this. lol. But you can reach Luxe Hiking Gear at 877-360-5893 Pacific Time. Washington State.

Forgot to mention. This tent, even though it does not have a floor, it comes with a draw tight screen mesh at top. It has 2 doors. Each door has a regular zip tent fabric door plus a zip screen door on the inside of both of these doors. You can purchase an inside enclosure if you want more protection.

I started using a Warbonett Bridge Hammock and Tarp around five years ago and have never looked back. There is never a problem finding trees where I hunt, and I have hung that hammock on the side of the mountain to get out of the wind in places that would be impossible for a tent. When it rains I stay totally dry. No more puddles filling up the bottom of my tent, and the comfort is unmatched. Rocks and roots are a non issue. The hammock comes with a built in bugnet, and with my quality top quilt and under quilt I have slept comfortably in temps in the mid teens.A951DCB8-FC49-4831-AB7C-AE32B9076F7B.jpegCC9D9098-798C-460C-AC21-63D3D8C7B5A7.jpeg2920E752-0DE0-44D9-A7B9-F31FC33E0E89.jpeg

I’m seriously considering ordering on of these. With the stove in can you fit three cots?

I'm in the process of building out my Backcountry kit but the short answer....No cause I want a floor. Bugs aren't bad out west but the mice will keep you up all night....If I went floorless they would've been in bed with me....No good. I like screens too, particularly being from the east coast.

Tarp and a bivvy work really well for me, I highly recommend it. I really like the space under a tarp, especially in the rain. I spend about 30-40 nights/year canoeing/winter camping in Ontario. I have two setups, one for winter and one for the other three seasons:

Winter: 8x10 silnylon tarp and the OR bug bivvy. Yes, bug bivvy for winter - the tarp is very versatile and excellent for snow/blizzard/precipitation. The role of the bivvy is to keep my sleeping pad under me, and to keep my WM winter bag from rolling off the pad and getting wet. I love the light mesh material because of the breathability - condensation moves away from the bag. In the mornings, there is usually a layer of frost on the bivvy, but the bag is pretty dry. I've used other alpine bivvies in the past, and there's always condensation building up inside the bivvy, and can get the bag wet. This is a problem is planning to stay longer than 2 or 3 nights.

3 season: Uber Bivy by Miles Gear and a tarp. Don't really need the tarp for weather protection, but it's nice to have extra space when it rains for a couple of days in a row. Condensation is better with the tarp in the rain, but I don't find it a big issue either way.

You guys are downright terrible for my wallet. I might have to stop coming here again :D

I have a hennessy hammock on its way

For me, you can't beat a hammock. But you have to learn how to setup and use them. It get's expensive. Eventually you'll need a nice top quilt and underquilt. It will change everything about camping if you don't sleep well on the ground and better sleep will help in your hunting game. You can't beat it for summer. For those worried about staying warm in the winter ...
