Hunter profiles

I'll play.

I'm Travis, originally from Gobles, MI which is a very small town about 10mi west of Kalamazoo. I started small game hunting, and then took up bow hunting when I was 12 with my father, followed by gun hunting at 14. We hunted across from our house on a tract of land that was huge as a kid, but now I realize it's probably 200 acres. It was great to have such an opportunity right out our door. I think I was 14 when I killed my first deer (tiny spike) during the MI Youth Gun Season. I killed a few more in my teens up North at our deer camp with a gun, but never had any success with a bow.

I went to college in Traverse City and was a regular at deer camp, but never really did much hunting beyond that. I look back now and regret that a bit as there is so much public land in that area that I could have explored. Honestly, hunting wasn't as much of a priority as partying was, and those early morning wakeups don't mix well with all night drinking.

After graduating in 2011 with a degree in Business I moved to San Antonio, TX. My college room mates moved down there and I'd visited a few times. I was looking to spread my wings a little bit and see what else was out there, so I went. Public hunting opportunities are kind of tough in TX and especially so in the SA area. My buddy and I made a few trips over to the Sam Houston NF for deer, but other than that we really stuck with dove hunting on some of the properties closer to SA. I bought my first bow since I was a teen at some point and did a few trips for hogs that were very, very unsuccessful. I was definitely back in the archery game though!

Lived in SA for a few years and really started to miss the seasons a bit so started looking for jobs in the Great Lakes region. Ended up taking a job in Minneapolis and moved up in 2013 without ever having been to the city. Prior to moving I did a ton of research on hunting opportunities and was excited to find that there were tons of public properties near the Cities. I took my first archery deer (5 point) on the 3rd or 4th day of the season in 2013 from a climber on public land in the metro. From that point on I've been almost exclusively a bow hunter. I've gun hunted a bit but the public is pretty crowded and it was just not something I enjoyed living so close to the Cities. I do partake in the muzzleloader season though which is much more enjoyable than the regular gun. In the years I've lived in Minnesota I've taken 4 or so deer, all with a bow. I hunt as much as a weekend warrior can and certainly have deer on the brain pretty much every day.

I stumbled on saddles a few years ago and put it in the back of my brain as something that I was interested in, but never really pulled the trigger. I purchased my first saddle last year and hunted for the first time out of it last year. I think the tipping point was the noise of lugging my climber through the woods only to be limited to the trees I could use. Saddle has been both an education and a game changer in the way I hunt. Last year was mostly about getting comfort dialed in on both the saddle itself and my whole setup. I am very much looking forward to this coming season and all that it brings!

As far as goals, I am super passionate about archery and have taken up traditional archery heavily this summer. I hope to take a deer with a recurve this season. It would be really really cool to take one with both compound and recurve, but I don't want to get too ambitious. :) I've dabbled in western hunting and am currently building points for another run at WY pronghorn in the next few years when my schedule allows. Elk is also a bucket list type item that I really hope to check off the list sometime while I'm still relatively young. At the end of the day, I guess I just really like being in the woods and think about it every day!

My real name is Kurt hence the online name "Kurt". I'm 56 and I killed my first deer(buck) when I was 16. It was on from there. I too am from divorced parents, and spent the bulk of my time being raised by my mom. I have two older brothers, and a younger sister and brother. I'm the only one who really got the hunting bug. We were also poor growing up. My dad wanted me to go into construction so I did that for a couple of years but couldn't shake the outdoors bug so after a while I started my own life plan. I went into the service, Army Infantry paratrooper with the 82nd ABN, for 4 yrs. to get the money for college. I studied and got degrees in Natural Resources Conservation, and Criminal justice. I've worked on a tree crew as a climber, did some scuba work, and I'm currently employed by my home state of Massachusetts (29yrs.) as a Wildlife biologist/ Fish Culturist. I've parlayed my climbing skills from tree work into climbing for the Natural Heritage Endangered Species program to band Bald Eagles which I've been doing for about 15yrs. I eat, live and breath deer bow hunting. I've killed elk and mule deer in the west, and loved that too. I had drug and alcohol problems when I was younger, but I'm proud to say that I've been clean and sober for 28 yrs. with the help, strength, guidance, and grace of the good lord. I'm also proud to say my children never had to deal with the not so good me. I am on my second marriage and have helped raise four beautiful children. I am a family man. I don't make friends easily, so pretty much you guys are it. I enjoy sharing my hunting story with a bunch of guys who love it as much as me. I also taught myself to play golf and when I was in my prime I managed to win 2 club championships, in the Champions division. Almost changed my career so I could play and teach golf. I'm less than 6 yrs. from retirement, and plan to go Gypsy with my wife for a couple of years, to see some more of this great country. I give all the credit of my lifes successes to my mom who was the shining example of love, patience, and understanding, Yea, so a momma's boy for sure. I like having a veg garden, long walks on the beach and rain storms,or anything else outdoor related it sounds weird but it's true. That's the short version of me. Edit: I've only been saddle hunting 2 yrs.

My name's Zach. I was born and raised in suburban New Jersey. Grew up in a town that was full of kids my age and spent every day outside fishing, riding bikes, playing street hockey, football, and causing whatever mischief we could. I was always interested in bows and arrows. Me and my buddies would build bows out of weeping willow branches and arrows out of forsythia and try to shoot unsuspecting backyard rabbits and squirrels. When i was about 12 my mom took me to the sportsmen's center to pick out a new fishing rod for my birthday. Slightly to her dismay, I picked out a barnett youth compound bow instead. I still have that bow today and just recently set it up for bow fishing.

Once i got to high school my interests changed to girls and partying only. I didn't think about bow hunting again until a few years ago after listening to an episode of the Joe Rogan podcast with Steve Rinella. I went out and bought a bow that week, started scouted local public land, listening to podcasts, reading forums, books etc. I had been hunting for less than a month when I shot my first buck from 5 yards sitting on the ground, and became completely addicted to hunting whitetails at that moment. Now it's about all i think about from June-March (April and May are for striper fishing).

Edit: I've never hunted from a tree stand. I use a sit-drag/RC harness, or the jx3. I do plan on picking up a hang-on stand just to give it a try. This site has really helped flattened the learning curve for me and I'm super grateful for that!

Not easy killing deer with a bow from the ground. Well done!

I was born and raised in Jupiter, Florida and still live in the general area. I grew up primarily fishing and got into hunting in college when a buddy gave me a bow. Went to Palm Beach Atlantic College (now a University) and studied biology with the thought of working on fisheries....Which I did from 90-99, primarily studying a great gamefish here in south Florida called a snook while working for the state. About this time, my wife and I had a son so I needed to find a job that had more advancement potential so I became a biologist with the Florida Park Service (99-00) and then Palm Beach County (00-current). I ran a prescribed bun program for PBC for 10 years, but now oversee the management of about 15,000 of County owned/managed natural areas. I have soooo many great spots that I'd love to hunt, but it isn't allowed and I like my job way too much! lol! My son is scheduled to graduate from Florida Polytechnic University in December and my daughter will be entering Florida State in the fall. So love for starting fires and the Seminoles = PYRONOLE. My wife and will will be empty nester's this fall so I hope to have more travel opportunities soon!

Primarily have hunted Florida public lands, never leased property but have been guest to hunts in Ga and Al. Got tired of wading through hot water several miles in 90+ degree weather, so I primarily hunt public lands in North Florida, about a 3-6hr drive each way. I'll hunt 3-7 days at a time and have a few cheap but clean places I've found to stay..cabins and family owned hotels mainly. I prefer to bow hunt but will gun hunt as well. I finally started to plan some out of state hunts to Ky, Mo, Ks and Iowa (first PP this year).

I primarily have hunted on the ground, or 1 section of a ladder stand and take advantage of thick cover for concealment. This is my first season in a saddle and will be primarily using a Phantom and helium sticks, both 20" and full size depending on the spots. I shoot a Quest Thrive and this year will be shooting a 515 grain VAP 300 with Grizzlistik 125gr Samurais!

In west Philadelphia, born and raised, on the playground was where I spent most of my days. Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool, and all shootin some b-ball outside of the school.
When a couple of guys who were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighborhood. I got in one little fight and my Mom got scared. She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'. I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said FRESH and it had dice in the mirror. If anything, I could say that this cab was rare. But I thought 'Nah, forget it' - 'Yo, homes to Bel Air'. I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'. I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air.

I started out at a young age of about 9 shooting guns fishing catching suckers and carp running the creeks throwing rocks at water spiders gigging snakes. I wore out a few bb guns blasting birds, chickens, bulls balls and whatever else u could shoot. (Yes I was a mean little sucker). I finally graduated to the hog killing single shot 22 and started practicing my sneaking along then and shooting birds with my paws 12ga when they'd pitch out of the silo in the winter.

That following fall dad finally took me hunting a few times and I killed first deer with him and a 222. Then we done a deer drive the next day with his friends and i ended up being the 1 killing the deer with that 222 while shooting it running. I have VERY FEW hunting memories with dad like that. Pretty well after that he turned me loose and let me fend on my own.

I got my first bow at 12. Golden eagle falcon flame. I couldn't wait to get home every day to shoot that huge foam target. Old adjustable brass pin cobra sight and a 3 finger tab.as my release and dads old Easton 2213 arrows. I didnt know what i was doing just was trying to hit what I aimed at. That summer I followed cabbage setter sticking plants in the ground that the guys missed earning 2$hr. My paw usually had 55ish acres.cabbage out a year till I was 18. I saved that money and bought me 2 packs of the old muzzy 100 grains.

I had no clue about broadhead tuning or bow.tuning I just shot the **** outta targets. Bill Jordan realtree outdoors was hot then and i remember watching it over and over the monster bucks 1 vhs video trying to learn all i could. That fall I drove my paws 1972 gmc around the hill to a family's little pine thicket where they had a old built stand they told me.i could hunt. With what extra money I had left I remember I bought doe estrous and squirt it on me for cover scent . That first morning a doe and 2 babies come by.amd I shot the momma. I drug her all the way out to truck alone. Carry bow a ways set ut down drag deer to bow and repeat. I got to the road and couldn't get her loaded. A car stopped and fella helped me load it. Wish I knew who it was today. I went right to the dairy barn where dad was milking and dad was in shock. The next 2 days I killed the 2 yearlings too. From then on it was on.

That spring id bought me my first turkey call the MAD super aluminator. Opeming morming I grabbed my paws 12 and the high powered black bird shells and took off. I believe I sounded like a fire truck probwalking calling having no clue what I was doing but as luck would have it I ended up killing a 2yo. I went right to the barn again. In shock of course.

Throughout my teen years its all I could think about. Besides sport's and farming all.i wanted to do was shoot.my bow hunt and fish. I would practice setting up.tree.stands on ground hogs in summer in fence rows to shoot with my bow..id kill it then find another. Even did skunks that way too. That's a different tail though.

When i was in 8th grade i killed my first buck with a bow. Was a big 9 at a fellas farm.who was having major deer trouble in his corn cause wasnt any food in the mountains that year. He's still a friend today. About 70yo.

After I graduated me and a buddy got our ownnplace and we went to work. We both farmed making pennies pretty much so deer and other wildlife kept us alive. We couldn't afford a beef from our families so for a couple years we struggled. I still was ate up with hunting but then but women entered the picture so my summers was whiskey bent and hell bound but come September when urban season opened i was on it murdering all I could in town limits then right into regular season hammering down tagging out buying bonus tags and filling them too. Its how we survived.

After I got into my early and mid 20s I was decent I guess at finding nice deer for here but nobody really was ate up with it like me i was.almost an outcast i was so into outdoors but most around me wasn't. Then a buddy and just kinda started hunting together a bit and it turned into a driving force on public. I got huge into trail cams and maps and such and it was a huge eye opening humbling.experience....ive learned people don't know what lurking around public. Also learned some folks "big" deer are my meh typical 100" booners I guess you'd say. Every fall we'd hunt our guts out. Shared alotta bad times but had.some good too.

From years of shooting 3d heavily and.traveling with the ASA competing to travel hunting now that I've gotten older and can afford it i look back and realize how much outdoors has shaped my life. The lessons its taught me. Outdoors has been a staple in my life and I'm not sure where I'd be without it. Even As years have come along I still don't shy away from blasting that first doe I see with a bow or maybe even the next couple. God made does for bows like he made turkeys for shotguns. Its just fun for me and we have fun doing it like we did years ago.

This is just kinda a short version of stuff. Felt I needed to add to this thread since i started it. Below is a few pics over the years

(Buck standing up with green doors is first buck i killed with bow) got in late that night and i went to school dad left it on back of truck cause it was cold so he skunt it for me.while I was at school

im Jordan (Jay) 37 from nowheresville Minnesota, i grew up in the country, and inherited my first bow around 10, which was mostly used to remove rabbits quietly from my moms garden on many early mornings. I got my first 410 around 12 which i used on my first deer hunt. I mostly rifle or shotgun hunted every year for deer from then until february of 2001 when i graduated high school early to join the Air Force.

I served 4 years as a Satellite Communication maintenance tech in Space Command in Colorado. While in I got married in 2003, and in doing so became a father, we have had 2 more boys since then (11 and 13). I currently work as a HHA, going into elderly and disabled folks homes and assisting them with cleaning and other household tasks they have difficulty doing. Its not a profitable job but i love it, i get to meet some very interesting people and hear amazing stories. I did not do any hunting in my 4 years in, but got back into rifle hunting again once i got out. I never really took it seriously for several years, I mostly used it as an excuse to get out into the woods again, like the many hours i did hunting anything from rabbits and squirrels to wild pigeon and pheasant.

Last summer i bought my dads bow because he couldnt shoot it anymore with his shoulders, and wanted to get a crossbow now that hes of age to use one legally. Now it has become an obsession because im out shooting at least 5 times a week.

Im honored to have had this career seek me out, i was poached from my job by my old boss after she had left and wanted me to to work for her again doing this type of work. ive been doing it for close to 10 yrs now

I've also worked with the elderly in a different capacity than you for 30 years now and they are my favorite kind of people. If you listen real hard you can learn a lot from them. Amazing part of our population. Thank you for your service Jay!
