What does sentence #1 have to do w/ sentence #2.? I guess I'm not understanding what another hunting season in zone 4 has to do w/ funding. At a recent meeting involving the NJ department of fish and game they said there may be 1 more hunting season in zone 4. The state wants it to happen because their funding for the area will go from something like 6 million to 27 million dollars. It’s a scheme to get federal money to fix the roads and bridges that they neglected for all my 45 years on earth. I suspect this Sierra club is involved because they see an opportunity to save the deer, Turkey and trout.
Anyway, I’d say it’s gaining traction because at the meeting they spoke like it was a done deal. Like everything else, it’s all about money.
Ahhh… now I see what you are seeing. When I said 1 more season, I meant that next year will be the last year for hunting there. Not an additional season. A little behind the scenes info. NJ fish and game has had a negative effect on the numbers of hunting licenses being sold over the last 10-20 years. Sales are in decline. The actions they are taking to try to raise more revenue are having the opposite effect. Example, many of our zones now have unlimited antlerless harvesting. Fish and game figured this would get more people excited to start or get back into hunting and increase license sales. After 15 years of this “kill’em all law” heard numbers are down. Older hunters are leaving because some smaller public parcels get driven out weekend after weekend from late September till January 31. I have hunted these places and you are hard pressed to find a deer living there. Over harvesting I believe has caused many people to give up on it all together. NJ fish and game has a lot of funding mismanagement leading them to a shortage of funding. This national park is a way for them to get the government to pay for improvements and such to the trails, roads, and parking areas in that region. I hope I cleared things up for you now. What does sentence #1 have to do w/ sentence #2.? I guess I'm not understanding what another hunting season in zone 4 has to do w/ funding.
Sadly, I think that's the case in for society in general. We are dying breed. Being an outdoors person is usually passed down. The older generations needed to hunt and fish to put food on the table. Now they don't. It's easier to go to the store. Then your kid can play video games on Saturday.Numbers have been up during Covid because people were getting paid to hunt and fish. In the big picture, decades, sales are trending down.
In many states there isn't a lot of public land and leasing for private ground is increasingly common. I think hunting is cost prohibitive for many people. You also have to factor in competing activities. If your kid plays a travel sport, most weekends are spoken for.Sadly, I think that's the case in for society in general. We are dying breed. Fellow hunters, we are under attack here in NJ & PA! The tree hugger group “the Sierra Club” a national club, is pushing along with state officials in NJ AND PA, to turn the Delaware water gap into a NATIONAL PARK. What is illegal in a national park??? Hunting and fishing for starters! But Jim, I don’t hunt the gap. How are you gonna feel when hundreds of displaced hunters show up in your favorite spot.
This was tried a few years ago and the hunting community shut it down. However, now they have a new scheme to include a designated space or two as preserved land which will allow hunting. I
envision hundreds of hunters on a couple acre plot tripping over each other.
I don’t have a clue how to petition to the senate to try to stop this. If anyone can offer me some guidance or wants to get involved, feel free to post here or PM me. This has to stop! 3 generations of my family hunted and fished there. I don’t want to be forced to hunt in your spots people.
I know NJ Fish and Game is not in charge of the Delaware water gap. But they are working closely with NPS and the sierra club and whatever other tree hugging groups are out there. I did a little digging around on the web. 59 out of 390 NPS properties allow hunting and it’s about 35% of all NPS land. They are proposing to add “preserve lands” for hunting. This is language to get it passed. I guarantee they will be small areas. I’ll add some links and you can read for yourself. Some of my info is from googling and some came from a friend’s brother who attends meetings with NJ DEP and NJ Fish and Game. This might be passed by Election Day this year. Not sure where you're getting your information, but you can too hunt in national parks...https://www.doi.gov/blog/hunting-and-fishing-national-parks-and-fish-and-wildlife-refuges
Also, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has been managed by the NPS since September 1, 1965...https://www.nps.gov/dewa/learn/management/national-designations.htm
According to this hunting isn't illegal in all National Parks: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/hunting/index.htm
That said, I can't think of any park that actually allows it.
