I’ve been told…

Interesting thread. Admittedly, I have not shot a deer with a trad bow in a few years yet I shoot one the majority of the time for practice. I find my hunting situations dictate a use for a compound a lot more lately.

Shooting my compound feels automatic. The stickbow definitely requires more reps. Add steep angles, maybe a shot window at 28-32 yards.....the precision of a compound is welcome.

I have my wife’s dads (deceased) old bear kodiak magnum, I have some parts laying around, maybe I’ll throw a sight on it and start messing with it this year. It’s not true trad but it’ll get me shooting it more.

I made the switch to almost exclusively trad this year for hunting and I noticed that it did affect my compound shooting a bit but It certainly didn’t destroy it. One thing that helped going back and forth was switching from a trigger release to a hinge release.

I do agree. Lol. I am

id say anxiety being a target anxiety or a form anxiety comparing both. Most compounds use releases, have peep, kisser, or ive even seen a clicker .
most trad bows ( from what i have seen ) are more trad like. No sights, no peeps, no kissers, no release, sometimes a clicker yes thats about it
With trad especially beginners thier is alot more to think about than picking up a compound and at least for me.
a compound becomes almost muscle memory
So much faster than a trad bow.
thats all i mean.
im far far from being talented , i just work on it or have been recently because i want to go 100% trad within the next few years.
I always say don’t worry about it, go Trad if you can deal with failure. And what I mean is you have to be ok with not shooting 40 yds. With missing once in a while, and all that. But, it’ll make you a better hunter! Without a doubt. The year I went 100% Trad I went to hunt in Illinois for big bucks and didn’t bring a compound bow. So no temptation. I shot a hog, it was awesome and I’ve killed all my big deer with Trad, and yep, I’ve missed some even bigger ones. Lol. But dude, it’s a deer, it’s an experience, and I can buy beef or shoot whatever deer. So have a good attitude, keep the shots close, and you’ll be used to being within 10 yds of your quarry all the time. I thot a deer from a saddle this year shotgun from 6 paces in the back of the neck. Couldn’t see more than 15 yds. Thick ass bedding. Anyway good luck and get after em. You’ll be able to pick “the spot” for close action within a short amount of time.

I think what happens is people get really set on what they think is the “right way to hunt” but in the end we’re all hunters. I mean you still have to do the hunting part (finding em) to shoot whatever you choose to shoot at the critter. So basically I might be a mostly hardcore Trad guy but I’ll still shoot compound, xbow, gun or whatever and have a good time with it.
This thread had me shooting in my garage yesterday with the longbow. 14 yds I was cranking, yea I have target panic with all weapons except when animals are moving. I’m best with rifle but it gets bad from there. It is what it is I’m a far better killer than I am a target shooter and it’s just the way it goes. So my buddies tease me on the range but I always kill. I guess it’s just one of those things.

Love the quote. Go trad if you can deal with failure. Awesome way to describe it.

Definitely i love the confidence and thanks man. If i can get to a comfort confidence level i will use trad 100%.

Well said and couldn't agree more!

Man, I couldn't agree more with both of your posts. This one is spot on for me too. You probably won't catch me shooting a compound or xbow, but I have no issue with folks using them. I do enjoy breaking out my rifles every now and then for a stroll through the woods. Actually took my grandpa's old Winchester Model 121 (I refinished a few years ago) out today and got a nice fox squirrel.

Target panic is common. Target panic is a strange concept to me. Thankfully I have not struggled with it. Does it disproportionately infect trad archers as opposed to compound archers?

I started to experience a form of target panic when I started shooting bows in the 40 pound range because the release became hard to pull off. I was also shooting with a cordovan tipped glove which made it harder to feel the string. I went to an all leather glove and did some shooting with my eyes closed to fix it.
