Finally shot at a deer, its been two years since. I decided to not go in at dark this morning and wait til daylight, but there were 2 trucks in the parking lot and i didnt want to mess up there hunts. So i waited til the left around 10am. Just was patient walking into the wind along a transition and looked over to my left and there was a buck 10 to 15 yards walking parallel tome. I shot him once with a slug and he dropped. I started screaming like a school girl. Then went and picked up my shell and went and seen he was still breathing and debated whether to shoot him again, i didnt want him to suffer and i kept debating whether to or not then all of a sudden he jumped up and started running i shot 3 more times and seen him run into a thicket. I decided to back out and give it 2 hours. I keep hitting myself in the head for that mistake. Lesson learned but i dont feel good right now.

Grab lunch, look at the map, and go back with a compass and a roll of TP.

Or, if you can stand it, wait until tomorrow morning. He'll keep, and he ain't going nowhere if he's dead.

I pushed a doe that reacted similarly once. Wished I'd have waited

Without knowing a few details, knocking him down with a slug should give you confidence. Be optimistic but also try to remember everything about the shot, where he went, where you shot him, etc. Good luck and keep us posted!

Yea i recorded what had happened and where he ran. After he ran away i noticed i didnt see any blood on him while he was on the ground. I did notice a spot on him when he was running about the size of a softball of blood on his side.

Tough lesson I hope you get him. In my experience when a deer drops immediately and then jumps up after a minute or two and runs away it hasn't been good. Usually they were grazed somewhere that temporarily immobilized them. However weird things do happen sometimes. Encouraging that there was blood on his side though. Do you think that you hit him with any of the follow-up shots? Was he running normal?

Found blood about 30 yards from where he dropped and couldn't find anymore. Got a dog going to come out in about an hour. Not feeling good at all.

Well had a dog come out but we didnt stay out long, no luck. I have to work at 5 am. I dont know if im gonna try and get the dog back out tomorrow after i get off work or not. Its just another part of learning, it just sucks and I hope he is still alive somehow. Hope i can get back out next weekend and get after them with these last few weeks left.

Don’t give up. Reminds me of a buck I shot with a muzzle loader at 30 yards. Knocked him over & after a while he got up & ran off. Lucky for me it was in an open field & I watched him go down. Not much blood to follow.
Hear is a link to the self filmed hunt.
