Keeping others informed when hunting from height

I'm a lot less communicative/informative when I am hunting from the ground. I should work on that. Not an issue until gun/muzzleloader season though. I don't even try still hunting with a bow. It's hard enough to get drawn without getting picked off from elevation...

I'll admit I'm not good at this letting people know where I am. And theirs no excuse other than sometimes I just don't want to be found. My wife will ask occasionally what area I'm going to be in when I hunt around home but that's always a crap shoot because the wind always switches before I make it where I'm going and I have to reroute while in route. On the remote hunts, I'm alone most of the time and I know the risk I'm taking if something catastrophic were to happen. I do try to at least check in when I make it back to camp if I have charging capabilities and service.

All well and good with cell phones, but as soon as the weather gets below freezing my phone battery is pretty much toast.

Before I climb I always send a screenshot of my location in HuntStand or OnX to my wife.

I use the app called Life360. You can share your location with whoever you want which is my wife of course.

It's free and uses satellite so no service needed.

I just share my location on Google maps, you can set it for an hour all the way up till you cancel it. I just let it run for my wife, and it updates pretty well even in low service areas.
Glad to hear this works ok. I discovered it after last season. Usually just gave my wife the general location and my buddy the exact location. This year I was planning on sharing my location with both of them using this method.

Unless you have a satellite phone people will not be able to see your location unless you have some sort of service. You may be able to see your location without it, but there's no way they can.

My wife and I alway keep our iPhone tracking on each other. Weird? Maybe but in case of emergency it is hard to beat. I usually text her when I start my climb or decent and a quick thumbs up when I’m secure at height or back on the ground.

I run avenza app as I only hunt nat forest land. I will drop a pin in areas I am going to park and one in area of stand. I screen shot this and send to my wife (who has no clue where these places are) with general driving directions. I also send the pic to a co worker who knows all these areas well. I will try to stick to plan but for me its hard. I usually wont wander too far out of the area if I do a scout/hunt. I have an agreement with both of these contacts that I will make further contact by 10pm (in case I shoot one and stay late to quarter/pack animal). It would suck to get hurt and have to wait until 2200 before flags are raised but thats hard to address. I then contact them as soon as I get to truck/service.

I've been living a lie for the past two years. Thanks for clarifying BC

No way I'm taking it that far! My wife might figure out how boring I really am!!

Haha, no worries. It's kind of in my job category, so I felt like I needed to say something. Location tracking doesn't take much, so it shouldn't take much service to update them.

On my lease we have a signin board with aerial map and magnets to put your general location and another magnet for morning or evening. Military base I hunt you sign out an area with time in/out and a bunch of other info and must have a second hunter or you can't hunt

i found a state park near me that I wanted to try out. I ask the park yogi for a map and went to scout. I found 4 places of interest. I went back to the yogi, and asked for another map. I put #1-4 on the map, and when I leave, I tell my wife which one I am at

I usually tell my brother where I’m going. I tell my wife to call him or my friend if she doesn’t hear from me. They are the only two people I trust to find me if something happens.

I texted my wife from the tree yesterday telling here where I was.

Text a pin before I start climbing a tree on google maps to whomever is with me or knows I'm out.

Do fire ants count as lesser predators? I'll be borrowing my brothers Garmin Inreach this year when I go on deep hunts to let everyone know I'm alright. And to come help pack out a giant buck hopefully!
