I have hurt my shoulder and cannot draw my bow. I shot about 20 arrows the other day then switched to broad heads just to shoot once or twice. I drew my bow back it felt literally like two bones rubbing together. I don't know what it did but it sux to lift my arm above my head right now. I can do it but don't like the feeling and seems to be getting better. So I will be opening season with a crossbow. Dirty secret: I like it. Lol.

Bone on bone indicates arthritis. I hope it isn't. Please definitely get it checked out. There are things that can be done if one chooses. That said, I have pretty bad shoulder arthritis in both shoulders and bone spurs in my right shoulder. That limited range of movement, weakness and pain took me right out of the vertical archery world about 8 years ago. I can not draw a bow without much difficulty and my right arm does not allow me to get a decent anchor.
What I have found in saddle style hunting and crossbow:
I use a youth sized crossbow, the shorter length does not require me to lean / push too far away of the tree for a shot. Youth sized is good.
A little practice and I easily shoot right or left handed. That is one benefit of a crossbow. Deer on left side, shoot it left handed, right side right handed. Deer on right, but behind me (5 O'clock), step to left, twist right and shoot it left handed. Mirror for other side.
No need to be monkeying around the tree for weak hand shots like a vertical. Or putting a platform up all around the tree.
The extra weight is a downer to carry.
Quicker drop than an arrow, so check your aiming points on your scope.
Get a roller rope cocker (cocking with your hand can alter left/right trajectory.
Harder to cock in tree. I put stirrup between my boot and stepp.
Keep your thumb and fingers below the deck (don't want to incur serious injury).
I find I like to hook the crossbow right in front of me above and offset from the tether on the tree. Minimal movement and can pick it up with either hand.
Good luck this season and don't sweat the hunting tool you choose. "Those that matter won't mind, and those that mind won't matter"
