Lets talk hammocks

At this point, I'm strictly a curious, window shopper for hammocks but I'm really drawn to something like an Amok style hammock. I like that you can side sleep, back sleep, or whatever. Amok come with a pad so I assume UQ would only be needed in extremely cold weather.

One other thing that I wonder about is the feasibility of rigging 2 Amok hammocks from the same 2 trees. Basically head to head. I doubt my wife would want her hammock to be located a distance from mine. I assume it isn't very feasible to hang 2 banana style hammocks from the same 2 trees but it looks like you could with an Amok. It that possible?

I’ve never rigged two hammocks from the same two trees but I’ve rigged the head end of both mine and my sons hammock from the same tree and then had two separate trees some degrees apart for the feet ends of our hammocks. That works well.

This triangle method that GCTerpfan is referring to is MUCH more comfortable than hanging 2 hammocks from the same tree. When utilizing the same 2 trees and spreader bars, both hammocks move each time either person does (toss/turn or gets in or out of their hammock). Also, if there is a significant weight difference, there may be some extreme teetering and yo-yoing going on :D

My wife not being on board with the hammock camping is why I went the tent route instead. Since I do more camping with her than solo it didn’t make sense to buy another sleep system. We have a car camping tent and a back packing tent. We each have ENO double hammocks and I’ve been tempted to get a bug net and rain fly several times but never pulled the trigger. I’ve been tempted by the EWO stuff but having to buy expensive under-quilts as well is not appealing.

I use a regular old rectangle sleeping bag as my underquilt...u use 550cors or equivalent and do the same.thing as a fleece saddle and make a bridge at either end and clip to the hammock biners. Couple chip clips and u can fully cocoon yourself

I’ve done this before as well and it worked pretty well. I did struggle to get comfortable though. I’m temped to try a ridge line.

This is the type of hammock that I am referring when I asked about hanging 2 of them from the same 2 trees. Basically one facing 6 o'clock and the other facing 12 o'clock. It's probably not that simple. Might need them at 2 different heights or something.
If it can work, then it sure would simplify choosing a camp with 2 adequate trees and would also keep the wife happy.

Convenience, good sleep or a happy wife. Choose 2. ;)

What is there to be tempted about? I can’t imagine not using one.

Use your sleeping pad in the hammock. I’m just as comfortable and warm with an insulted sleeping pad as I am an underquilt.

ive slept two nights in my hammock so far. the first was just the hammock and a blanket i got up at 2 am and came in. the second i used my sleeping pad and a sleeping bag. it was much better with the sleeping pad and the bag. i have a camping trip in north jersey from the 15th to the 17th!!! cant wait. Hopefully i will kill some deer to lmao!!!

Our annual camp out, saddle hunter get together weekend coming up I've been messing with the hammock system lately. Slimming it down a little and trying to make it more efficient.

1 things I recently "learned" was that I apparently should pay better attention to the hammock terminology. I read all about ridgelines and I got plenty....1 for the rainfly and 1 for the bug net another I hang stuff off but I didn't understand what a "hammock ridgeline" was until now. Wow...big difference is how everything behaves

I ended up going away from ultra light hammocks and bit the bullet to buy the Haven Safari XL… Man that thing is next level comfortable. It’s quite a bit heavier 11lbs compared to 4.5lbs than my old ENO set up but it still packs down decently enough

I'll set it up this weekend and take some pics of what I been messing with for some critique .....and I think the rainfly gonna get seam sealer and a spray of silicone. I've never treated it and it doesn't leak but I think I just go ahead and treat it like preventative maintenance....I don't remember when I got my hammock stuff but it was when we were still driving to fort Stewart to go hang out with everybody

What all is included in that weight?

I seen this video and stole his design for the rainfly. i also had this big wire loom stuff I found in the dumpster at work that works pretty good to make a "sheath" so now the whole thing stays intact and rolled up in the storage pouch. Take it out and attach the loop and toggle side to the tree. Wrap around the other side and adjust a prusik that u push the toggle thru and that works as ur midline loop for a truckers hitch. Self locking. Once u got the line tight between the trees center the fly and use the 2 prusils with small biners to set and tension the fly. Slide the covers off and the fly falls into place ready to be staked out. Glow in the dark 550 cord that also reflective for the guy lines. The way the EWO rain fly is made u got a grommet and a plastic buckle thing....pass a bight thru the grommet and capture the buckle thing and tighten down.....stupid easy and quick
