LIVE from the Saddle 2024

Still windy and a little snow on the ground.. bumped off a few moving deeper after some lunch. Found a nice tree with a nice split up high. I took my sticks out the other day.
But I had my rope. So made an improve throw ball from a bottle and string I had. Worked. Plenty of wind to cover my noise I think. Screenshot_20241129-152545.png

I went out again this afternoon. Pretty cool this evening. I went into a spot not too far out that I slapped a camera up on the 16th, over a couple of scrapes. I was bored and wanted to see what was making them. After pulling the camera and checking it I decided since it was getting late and the scrape had activity that I would just set up over it. It was only about 200 yards from the road. The tree I 2TC up into is a good one. At about 20 feet there is awesome cover from a little white oak growing just beside the tree I am in.

I got set at 2pm and about 2:30 I heard a deer blowing about 350 to 400 yards to my North, across the road. The wind was from the North so she could not be smelling me, but there were a fair number of folks out. I think she may have been bumped by somebody. About half an hour later I hear her blowing again but now she is closer, maybe 200 yards. Pretty soon I hear her coming through the woods. She's headed right to me. In fact, she gets so close to the base of the tree I have no options to shoot her if I want to.

Let me say, there were some folks out today whose cartridges were burning a hole in their pocket. Some dude (I'm assuming) could not stand it anymore and about 3:30 proceeded to methodically fired off 20 cartridges from a high-powered rifle and then left a little while later. Maybe he was going to buy more shells. Anyway, there was a lot of shooting that just didn't sound like anyone was actually shooting deer and were just blasting away at stuff.

Here is a picture of the little buck that made the scrape. He's got a lot of mass for his age and is tall and tight. He's a cool deer.

It was a fun hunt. I've got stuff to take care of for the wife tomorrow, but I will hopefully be out Sunday.

A cold 28 here in bama this morning. Got busted putting my clothes on at the base of the tree before first light. In a little thicker stuff so didn’t climb very high. Hoping they keep moving throughout the morning.

This was one ugly season for me. Never struggled like this in over 20 years of hunting. I stuck with it and knew it would happen. Archery season I have very high standards. Rifle it's if it's legal it goes down. Now the best part begins I get to sit with my father the rest of the season

Quarter in exit hole. I have the velocity way way down to prevent losing half a deer. It's like 45 70View attachment 111715
The big guns are a lot more versatile than people think. I have a load for my 458 Lott that is like a 45-70. A four hundred grain cast flat point at 1850 fps. That would make a great deer load. I have shot a doe with full power Remington factory loaded 375 H&H Magnum 270 grain JSP. Dropped her on the spot and a small entrance and 1/2 inch exit.

That was a Barnes 500 gr tsx at 1900

Judging by the exit hole not much. I just gut him and his lungs weren't jelly matter. Just a big ol hole through them. I think Extreme velocity is what vaporizes meat. Even my 257 Weatherby can cause some serious wreckage
Oh, yes, between the two I would bet the 257 would destroy a deer more than a 460. The 460's bullet is just so massive and designed for much larger animals. It is just going to zip through a small animal like a whitetail.
