I've only had the opportunity to bowhunt in the snow once. I dream of getting to do it again. Seems like when we do get the snow, I have something else planned for me already, or the road conditions are so bad it would be unreasonably risky to drive.

Well, I could have a few other times, but it was rifle season, and I had the .270 in my hands instead...
I'll Trade You a Hunt in the Snow For a Hunt for Pigs. I Love to Hunt Pigs But We Don't Have Them Here!

Well setup for the evening on a little private spot 15mins from home. This morning was a blast. I jumped 2 nice bucks, tried tracking them in the snow afterwards. More power to ya if you can do that consistently ( @Topdog )
I kept getting them mixed with other deer & finally lost them. I stopped counting at 100 plus different intersecting trails. Nice sign, bunch of beds & fresh tracks. Gonna be setup in the morning where I jumped that bigger buck. That place gets a lot of pressure & im gonna be in early….. not out of the saddle but shot a nice die on the way to the truck. You’re going “Beast mode” and attempting the bump and dump I love it, I hope you kill that racker!!! I haven’t looked at this thread in a month, you guys are loving that snow I see, there’s nothing like it in my opinion, if you get one leaking there’s no fumbling around in leaves looking for blood, just follow the painted trail! @gcr0003 around here when we get our first snow of the season every animal alive is on it’s feet and covering ground, it’s a great time to be in a tree and hang tight!!!

So I’ve dealt with this issue skiing early on which is why I’ve gone to a shell system for it. For bow hunting the louder goretex/rain shells aren’t ideal. I risked it today in the snow just to see what the FL solitude system could handle. It did alright but soaked up the melting snow pretty good making it feel damp and extra heavy. It’s not a big issue since I don’t hunt much rain +cold, usually one or the other. I really didn’t see any beading water like I’d somewhat expect.. under impressed all in all. In the future I’ll wear a shell if I’m hunting the next day and can’t afford to have everything get wet.

That said, how do yall dry everything? I’ve been trying to stay away from the dryer but I’m hunting tomorrow and may have to at least tumble dry it. I had it hanging in front of the fireplace but wasn’t doing a whole lot and I don’t want to catch stray embers.

For you guys that hunt in snow storms do you where rain gear or is it typically cold enough that the snow isn’t immediately melting and getting everything wet?

Typically for me its cold enough that I find I stay fairly dry when the snow is falling and I can just shake it off, In fact I often wear my wooltimate as my exterior layer in the snow, it just shakes off at the end of the hunt. If its right at the 32 deg mark and is falling wet and heavy I wear my rain gear as my outer layer. Since I hunt mostly remote I'm not really good at drying stuff since all I can do is drape it in front of the camper heater. Therefore I tend to have at least two of everything so I can cycle between wet and dry (or dryish) gear.

First off I don’t daudle around when I get home, I bring everything soaked or saturated into my “hunting room” which is in my basement. It’s small, like 12x10 and I keep a space heater in it (or a dehumidifier for the warmer months) to keep humidity at or below 55% and then temperature slightly above the rest of the house. I also have a Peet Boot dryer in there. I have a collapsible aluminum drying rack that I hang everything on in that room. If a ton of gear is wet I drape it over that and also my bow press, hanging hooks in the room, everywhere you can imagine. It’ll look like a landfill sometimes during the height of the season. But by morning everything is dry and or dehumidified. I used to hang everything in and around the woodstove but the wife never appreciated the “huntin’camp” look and with three daughters running around with perfume and glitter and what not……. I figured my system out eventually. It works for me. Kind of a pain in the morning packing everything back up but after a few times you know your gear and where it goes and it’s a quick way to inventory and check for damaged gear too while you’re stowing it.

Back in here this morning, pics when it’s light. We got another couple inches overnight & the roads were a mess on the ride out. I’m hoping this fresh weather doesn’t keep the other hunters away. I’m setup watching this knob where that buck was bedded yesterday, but would love some deer to get pinballed around.IMG_1549.jpegIMG_1550.jpeg

I’ve done some combination of everything that @boyne bowhunter and @woodsdog2 sais but I also am not afraid to throw something in the dryer on low heat.

I actually dry all of my merino socks and base layers on low heat also. My process on wool is to run the first dryer cycle on “no heat” and then run two or three cycles on low heat. I haven’t had any issues with things shrinking. No promises, but it’s worked for me for years.
