Looking for knife recommendations

Havalon, once you just swap blades to another scalpel you'll never go back. I preemptively change them after 2 deer.

Swiss Army"Hunter" large lock blade and a gutting blade that will rip through ribs and stay sharp. Also has a saw blade and a bunch of other built in tool that come in handy.

I’m pretty much in the same boat as Newhunter1
Mora Eldris and Havalon Piranta are all I need to take a deer from the ground to the freezer

I need a new knife for deer hunting. I used Benchmade up until last year when I bought a Cutco. After cleaning my 4 this year I have grown to hate the Cutco. I went on base and looked at the Benchmades then thought I would look for recommendations elsewhere first. I’m willing to pay a good amount for the right knife, that will last. I don’t mind sharpening knives, but it has to be able to make it through a couple smaller deer without extreme dulling. Guthook is a non-issue, if there okay, if not okay. I have smallish hands, and kill Bambi’s, so no Kabar sized knives. Decent sheath leather or Kydex is a must.

Any helpwould be awesome, as the only stores around me are Wally World, Academy, and ****s. Cabelas/Bass Pro is about an hours drive, and I hate going in those stores (personal).

Also, if anyone wants to buy an awesome Cutco 5717KP with DD edge and guthook for a great price (compared to retail) give me a shout. I’ll let it go cheap and will get factory sharpened before mailing out.

Thanks.

What did you not like about the Cutco? I have a clip point and a drop point and have used them for YEARS and love them. They just stay sharp for a long time if you stay away from bone. I have had the clip point for about 25 years and after sending it back for sharpening after every season for about the first 15 years. I was helping do crop damage control on a big farm in east NC and I averaged butchering about 50 deer each year with this knife. Last time I sent it back for sharpening about 4 years ago they sent me a brand new knife and sheath.

I just bought a Argali carbon knife, I think it will be a good middle sized knife for gutting and butchering. Will report back once I get it.

Are you looking for a knife just for field dressing or to skin, quarter, and bone out? You also didn't say if you were looking for folder or fixed blade. I'm guessing fixed because of your sheath requirements. Here are my suggestions.

Several people have suggested knifes from Bark River. These are great knifes and come with great leather sheath. I own one myself, but I wouldn't point you towards it because they have a convex edge. This means you have to sharpen with a strop. It will hold an edge well but is a pain if your trying to sharpen in the field. They are a beautiful quality knife that is made in America, but I feel they are more maintenance than the average person is willing to put in to keep sharp. You also can't go to any store to look at one as they are only sold through a limited amount of retailers.

Here are a couple options that I think you would be very happy with.

Benchmade Steep Country - https://www.benchmade.com/15006-steep-country.html
I think this is a top option, which I currently own. A friend of mine has one too and I feel like he put it best. This knife is everything you need and nothing you don't.

ESEE Izula II - https://www.eseeknives.com/product/izula-ii
Another great option that is a little less expensive. Blade HQ usually has them on sale for around $75. Fantastic warranty and it's hard to find a bad review of this knife. I think this is another one of those knifes that is everything you need and nothing you don't. I also have smallish hands and this knife fits perfect. Here is a good review to watch from a guy who has clearly used his A LOT -

Benchmade Bugout - https://www.benchmade.com/bugout-family.html
If your ok with a folder I would look at this one as it would be a great EDC knife too.

Benchmade Mini Crooked River - https://www.benchmade.com/15085-2.html
Sweet looking folder with more of a classic hunter look.

I think the replaceable blade folders like the Havalon Piranta or Gerber Vital are also great options if that interests you. I have the Piranta and it works great. It's a great option if you are looking for light weight option to add to your kit.

Hope this helps and good luck in your quest for your next knife.

I actually have one of these on the way. Should be here on Monday. I only got to get the guts out and was really intrigued when I looked them up based on the suggestion above. Thanks for the recommendation.
