LWCG .5 vs saddle setup

Last edited:
After a couple of seasons using saddle ok only, the latter part of this year, I switched back to a bigger hang on.

I noticed that I definitely liked having my back to the tree. I also noticed I was less comfortable. The time seemed to go by slower and I felt like I was looking at the time more often.

I didn't have the money to splurge on a .5, so I found an old Warren and sweat for $20 on the local FB marketplace. It weighs 7lbs I think.

This year I'm going to go with a hybrid approach. Throw my treehopper reacon in my pack. Will probably turn and sit in the seat during peak movement time, and still be able to use the saddle for comfort.

I was already carrying around a 5lb mission platform, what's another 2lbs for the room and versatility?
I think I have one of those old Warren & Sweat 7lb stands in my collection. If I remember correctly it was one of my earliest "purchased" tree stands. Kind of an oval expanded metal platform supported by cables with a short height to the folding cloth seat.

If yours is the same as mine be sure to check the strap well. There was a product recall on them at one time.

Also, if I remember correctly the reason I quit using mine at the time (other than the short seat height) was that it's only rated for 200lbs. They are light, small and easy to setup though. Enjoy it!

How do you hybrid guys setup to hunt? First issue I see with this method is when hanging in saddle I'm looking one direction, when seated in stand I'd be looking the complete opposite direction....maybe that's a good thing in areas where deer come from any direction..

I would setup the stand as facing the direction the deer are coming from. I plan to use the saddle as more of a comfort measure. Seeing deer coming in while in the saddle, I'll turn and stand on the platform or sit on the seat

Many guys and gals using hang ons in a hybrid scenario will lean and sit in the saddle only, which means you are looking the same direction either way.

But, for someone who will lean and use the seat to sit:

I like 2 o'clock and 10 o'clock for a trail tangent to 12 o'clock. 2 for deer expected left to right, 10 for deer traveling right to left.

8 o'clock and 4 o'clock can work good too, especially in smaller trees.

But there are so many factors. Tree size, cover, shooting lanes, wind, tree lean, preference for leaning or sitting, etc.

This year I used my LW assault as a hybrid for bow, I simply hung it the same way you would a platform, I don’t use the seat, the only difference for me is on the weak side shot I just stand up and turn around, works for me.

I've been having foot pain from leaning too much in a saddle.. I've got new boots to try for next year instead of my LaCrosse rubber boots but there will still be times I have to have the rubber for water reasons...With that said, I can't stand to sit in a saddle, thus the reason I've been looking into the hybrid so I can sit in a regular stand some but sounds like you guys aren't using it that way, more just for a larger platform.

With the .5, yes. I still like having the option of the seat though, but I'll mostly stand or lean and only occasionally will sit. I'd even consider removing the seat if it didn't make for such a smart carry shelf and handy knee pad to sit into when necessary.

But, if I felt like I was needing to do more sitting, I might grab my more cumbersome Millennium M7. I can and do sit in it, and actually find it pretty comfortable to stand facing the tree with the seat supporting me just below my knees as well.

The only seats I find comfortable on loc on stands are the Millennium style, and while the M7 doesn't come close to the comfort of the M100u, it works ok for me and far surpasses any cast seat and pad that I've used. There are some better aftermarket seat pads that I haven't tried. Maybe that would change my perception.

I sit with my .5 as a traditional tree, then to take a break I’ll stand up turn around and face the tree and lean saddle style. If have to take a shot to the back of the tree I’ll just do it traditional saddle style. Or if it makes sense based on the incoming deers direction, such as 9 o’clock direction, I might even sit down on the seat of the seat of the stand backwards facing the tree and just straddle tree and shoot out to the side there. It’s really comfortable to sit that way I thought. Kinda wish I could sit that way all the time. I guess I could but probably not practical.

Gotcha. I'm looking to use the .5 on shared private where I don't like to leave presets. Before I started with a saddle I used a LW Alpha. Guess I'm just wondering if guys who are using .5 feel like they have enough room for a 4-5 hour sit?
I spent a lot of hours in a .5 this past season. Comfort was never an issue for me. Only thing I would change with the .5 is the seat height.

You can add a thick cushion to the .5 to add some seat height. I have the 1.0 also, and the seat height is about 2 inches taller. Going to use both next season. I’m sold on lwcg and might never hunt out of a saddle again. I do have a cruzr xc and love it. I have used it as a hybrid with the .5 Which is a nice setup. Best of both worlds.

I thought about adding a piece of scoreboard insulation as a booster seat, that might be one of my off-season projects.

Have you tried the Rut Roost? Sounds like it might be what you are looking for? I bought one from the Classifieds and I’m waiting on the shipping services to get it to me! I also bought a hang on stand to try the hybrid style! I think you guys are onto something here!!!!!

I have not tried the roost but I know about it and are tempted to try it still. It does look nice and comfortable. I may break down and get it sometime.

I have a few things I’m still waiting on too. Several weeks overdue. Wish they would get their act together!

Interesting comments here. I have always been a tree stand guy, but switched to a saddle for mobile hunting this year. I wasn't super comfortable on long sits, and honestly believe I'm more accurate shooting from a stand.. I will be comparing it to the comfort and usability of the 0.5 early next season.

Of course, that assumes they smooth out the edges on current product. I bought a used 0.5 and immediately sold it for fear of destroying my gear or cutting myself. If they tumble the components prior to coating, they will likely get my money. Do that, and give me a 1.0 seat (or preferably a mesh seat), and I'll break out my wallet to fast, Cody's gauges will fall out.

My back is trashed and I can’t sit in a normal tree stand for more than 10 minutes, I used to stand the whole time, 2-3 hrs and then I was done, so I bought a cruzr xc and several platforms last year to try saddle hunting, what I learned.... For me the saddle for comfort is a game changer, I no longer feel any pain and actually have a hard time staying awake at times I am so comfortable, I sit a lot and lean some, the platforms and ROS and all that stuff was cool for a rifle as I didn’t really need to learn any ninja moves for shooting, with a bow it’s just not the same for me, to be honest I didn’t practice much but I have bow hunted for 28 years and I have never had a problem shooting and I really don’t want to change how I shoot with a bow I’m dialed in, so for this coming season I bought a .5 stand and plan on using my cruzr, my trial runs so far in the yard have been great, I just fold the seat up out of my way and sit in my saddle or lean, to shoot just stand up, no ninja moves, I’m back to a tree stand, thats how I plan to bow hunt next season, and probably a lot of rifle too, for a small packable setup sometimes during rifle I also will be using a preset solo scout, I will just watch the slack in my tether when using my .5 and cruzr and honestly think I will have the best of both worlds, there is basically no learning curve in my opinion, I’m reaping the benefits of a comfortable saddle and still have a shooting position I am comfortable with, for the record I am an arborist by trade and have zero fear of heights and climb on a weekly basis, I just feel more confident shooting a bow from a stand like I have my whole life, hope this helps. And to answer your question yes I definitely think the .5 has enough room for a 5 hr sit when wearing a saddle.

I feel the same way. Spot on

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. Why use a $150-200 saddle when you can get a $50 RCH and add lineman's loops and accomplish the same task? Plus the RCH is better for fall arrest. I'm asking because I've contemplated a hybrid set-up.

I've been wrestling with this one myself! I'll be interested to hear some input.

I wouldn't find a RCH comfortable to sit in for periods of time. Otherwise I'd have to agree with you.
