Madrock safeguard question?

I finally got my safeguard in the mail and have been playing with it in the back yard. I have watched several videos of this in use but I can’t really see the path of the rope on the tag end when rappelling. On mine the rope nearly always wants to flip to the left side and ride over the top instead of the end of the device. Anyone else have this issue, and is there any concern with this? Thanks.

Yes. Mine does the same.
One thing I learned is when you get ready to rappel stand up and pull some rope through your Madrock before you start down. Makes for a smoother start. The rope seems to bunch up or something when under tension and it makes starting rappel from a tensioned state less smooth. It seems you have to pull on the handle a lot harder to start your descent when starting from the static position. Hope that made sense the way I described it but much smoother when you stand up pull some rope through and then start down the tree.

You’re good. That’s the way mine has always wanted to go and if you notice that area is rounded so it won’t damage the rope at all. The only real detriment would be that it would introduce a bit of a twist over a longer rappel but nothing we have to worry about at our heights.

Part of it is caused by the coil in the sheath on the rope from the factory and partly how the line feeds through the device. While you are hanging you can work the coil into a more neutral position. After that it’s what everyone else said. Smaller diameter line isn’t affected as much.

I’ll also add that I’ve found that a stiffer rope, such as Sterling HTP

Mine does the same, but usually tries to go off the back. Occasionally the front but mostly the back.
