Alright guys, Maine bear season over bait opens a week from today. I have 3 or 4 bears hitting my bait in SOUTHERN Maine, which is a feat in itself. Ranging from around 80lbs up to 250lbs (250 is the average harvest weight statewide).

My grandfather has a horseshoe up his azz at 80 years old and somehow also has 3 bears on his bait, one of potentially breaking the Maine archery boar record of 540lbs. This things head barely fits in a 55 gallon drum.

If things shape up I may be able to sweet talk him into swapping bait for the night because he cannot draw a bow back anymore. Either way, if the boys and myself put some bears down next week, who wants to see some bears drop by bows out of a saddle on the ol YouTube?!Bear.jpg

hell yes....Hopefully you smash the hell out of him !!!
Like @Hunter260 said, I'll have to make a Sunday trip down to the pro shop and spend the day there tinkering with arrows and heads. Not going to go dump the money until the opportunity is or is not determined though.

If by chance he says go ahead than yes lets hope!

I have killed enough bears to know that you don't need some magical arrow though. Stay off of that shoulder and you are fine, rib bones are hardly bigger than a 200lb whitetail. Fixed blade heads at 125gr have always done the trick and pass through 90% of the time with a lung shot. You don't need a cape buffalo set up for black bear. @Hunter260 @Hogwild2004

I have killed a few decent black bears as well and my arrows pass through easier than a large hog. Kinda creepy hunting over bait when the bears decide they want to climb in your blind with you though

My biggest was 365lbs fully dressed. You're right, they are wayyy less dense. Their make-up is almost gelatinous, arrows seem to glide right through.

I have seen a 400 pounders shoulder blade stop a .30-06 though. We found bone chips and blood, no bear. Avoid that armor and you're fine.

Their rib bones are more bladed than round or oval, so that's what makes me suggest the fixed blade cause it can get tight in there.

@gameflogger they also usually catch the .40 to the nugget if they start coming up the tree. Crazy how fast they can make it 20'!!!
I just keep a whooping stick with me for them, a couple of wraps on the beak usually gets their attention. Once I had a 19” boar climb the ladder I was puckered then, I broke my whooping stick on his skull and he kept climbing, I pulled my quiver off my bow and started whooping him with that. He climbed down and sat indian style about 30 yards away rubbing his nose and looking up at me popping his teeth. Needless to say I let the arrow fly on that one!

My outfitter told me “don't worry the big ones don't climb trees“. My reply to him after that was “They dang sure climb ladders”!

I wish I could post videos, I have some cool footage of him stomping around the base of my tree after a sow refused his advances
