Making an aider/etrier

I've been looking into making or buying a 2 step aider/etrier to hang off of my Muddy stick to climb with. I went to my local REI and found they had 18mm wide slings that are sewn into a loop and are 120cm long. Would that work well enough to make a 2 step aider? Or do I need something wider than 18mm? Any info on how to make or where to buy a 2 step aider is appreciated!
