This is how I use and manage my Rappel Rope Retrieval and Gear Hoist Line. It 40ft of 7/64 Amsteel and has virtually no stretch. Just about everything I take in the woods will have dual purpose so as not to carry a lot of extra stuff.

That figure-8 method never worked for me. Always wound up with a tangled mess. After the last time I stopped at Hazard Fraught and bought a dog leash to spool my Dynaglide on to, never looked back.

I'm assuming it's the retractable version... if you hook it to your rappel rope, rappel down and let it go, does it shoot back up the tree? Also, how much line can you fit on it? I keep it at 40ft in case it gets stuck and I have to back away from the tree and pull.

Why don't you use dynaglide for a pulldown (packs down smaller) and just a loop on the end of your rappel line for a pull up? That would be even more compact ;)
I do love the figure 8 for my dynaglide!

I didn't want to go to too small of a diameter string. Sometimes I'll attach my bow/gun to my back pack and pull them up together. I found too small of a diameter is difficult to grab and pull the weight of a back pack with my bow / gun and can slide through my hand too easily.

It stays in a MOLLE canteen pouch on my battle belt so there's no way for it to go up the tree. I've got 40' of Dynaglide on it because I used the 40' kit from EWO, but I think the spring will only let me deploy just over half of that. I use it to pull up my bow - pack comes up on the end of my rappel rope - and then pull down my Delta link. I also have a treble hook on it so I can fish for anything I drop.
