Hey folks,

I’ve always been an UA cold gear user and am looking to see how merino base layers go. My hunting season high temperatures when I hunt are typically 40’s down to highs in the 20’s. Rarely colder but can be. Am I better off with 2 layers of mid weight or expedition weight as a base layer? Thanks.

I like a 125 or 150 base with a polyester over it and if it's going to be a cold one I put a 400 over the polyester or down if it's brutal cold.

UA is pretty good, so don't throw it out. It can be a good layer over the merino.

Following this. I have UA and I have Scentlok Baselayers and I’m looking at getting some of my first Merino wool garments. Is it best to keep the Merino wool next to skin? With the Scentlok baselayers over them? Or keep the Scentlok baselayers next to skin and Merino Wool over top? With the wicking and body heat regulating being the reason for the Merino wool, it would make most sense to me to wear it underneath. That being said, I’ve never worn Merino wool other then socks so any input would be appreciated.

I love my kuiu merino wool base layers next to skin. I’ll wear the 125 tee as an everyday shirt in the heat or as next to skin base if the low is in the 50s. Below 50s I use the 145. Once the kuiu weights get around the 200, after the 145s, there is other additives to the merino that I don’t care for. I stick with the 145 for my heaviest base next to skin because it feels awesome and I never can smell an odor on it. Even after days of use. I’ll go with synthetic layers on top after that. I use to use synthetic next to skin and they did great wicking but the merino was always warmer and felt better.

I always use the merino as a base layer as that works best for me. I may have 3 or 4 layers after but merino is next to skin for me.

Any other brand recommendations out there? Thinking I may buy a lightweight top and a heavyweight top for late season. Debating which I wanna go with bottoms. Was thinking something medium weight. Lower half usually isn’t an issue unless it’s real cold.

Last year, I got the Pnuma bottoms and First Lite mediums for base, love both next to skin. Over that I got Cabela's ECWS (think that's what it's called) heavier. Nice combo but I have limited time using them.

I use a variety of brands picked up from ebay. Smartwool, First Lite, Icebreaker, 33 Degree. They all work pretty much the same for me.

I love my first lite base layers. I would highly recommend a 250 weight. Can serve as a outer layer in the 60s and a next to skin/midayer for everything below that. Also have the 350 weight and its a killer insulting piece. So to answer the OP question, I'd get one of each of those weights if you can afford it. Would recommend a lightweight synthetic next to skin to improve moisture management though. IMO that setup is the best of both worlds, speaking of synthetic vs merino.

I use icebreaker (200 wt), ll bean (200wt), and first lite merino (250 and 350 wt). First lite is the best quality out of them all, but they all work very well. If you get the ll bean merino make sure you get the Tall version as they run a little short and will shrink on you. I went up a size and it’s still almost too short in the Regular length.
A hardy nod goes out to FL for great products and their commitment to conservation. Only piece of theirs I haven’t been impressed with is their Dobson aerowool briefs (2018 version). The aerowool part in the crotch completely wore out with just a few wears... disclaimer, I probably did not launder them correctly, but still, for the money they should have lasted longer. I don’t know if this issue has been addressed in more recent models of aerowool, but their Kiln and Furnace merino-X stuff is absolutely fantastic.
