Here is my milkweed haul for the day. Do any of you guys pull the seeds out before the pod turns brown and then air dry or do you wait until the pod starts drying out before pulling the seeds out?

It’s better to wait for them to dry out. Fluffier results and better flight
I grabbed 3 pods Sunday while I was scouting some public land, tossed them in my jeep top console thing on my dash. Fast forward to today a couple hours ago while driving the jeep enjoying the weather she reached into the console and grabbed the dryest one of the bunch, said EWWWW and threw it out the window!

Better lay them out to dry completely.
I thought mine had dried out and they molded in the bag.

Thanks I really appreciate the advice. I will go lay them all out now. Could you speed the process up somehow (like a dehydrated, hair dryer, etc.)?

Dang it. Why did t you mention dehydrator earlier. He needs to earn his keep before jerky season!

I have them Kaye’s our in my garage drying now so that way my wife won’t accidentally throw them away and I’m not to sure about the dehydrator b/c if monarchs eat it to be poisonous to other animals then I don’t want to have anything happen to me lol. But if anyone knows of a way to dry them out faster please let me know.

If you pick them before they are ready, split the pod, gently remove the fluff, put it in a super fine delicates laundry wash bag (couple bucks at Walmart) and hang them in front of a fan.
Kept the fan running for a couple days until they get fluffy.

The constant air flow will dry them out.

I have two bags, one for drying in front of the fan and the second for storing the dried fluff.

Putting on any heat or in a dehydrator will mess them up. Been there, done that.

Today’s pic hanging in front of my stand up fan.

I don't know if many pull the seeds before they use them. I do. I wait until they're dry and starting to open. They're laid out pretty good in there and I try to not disturb that. I don't get all the seeds off but I can get most. I think they fly better without the seed attached.
