Mitch Rompola

What were everyone’s thoughts on the final episode on the Rompola buck series on the Deer Hunter podcast? It is episode 231 if you didn’t get to listen yet. I haven’t found anyone on here discussing it.

I think Mitch is a good hunter. Probably shoots a lot of legit nice deer. But I also think the big one was a hoax. I think they were trying to push the scent lure stuff. Like he said, I don't think they had any idea the internet would blow up like it did, and they got into more than they could handle. I'll keep dreaming northern Michigan can hold some of those monster deer. But in reality, I doubt it.

agreed 100%.

I know some people think Kevin came off bad and throw shade his way, but I’ve had multiple conversations with him and I can say without a doubt he’s a standup guy.

Fact: Everybody that has handled that rack or was witness to the whole deer in question has said it was legit, including several certified scorers and a Tribal Conservation Officer, not one has said the rack or deer could have been altered.
Fact: Everybody claiming the rack is fake or manipulated by a taxidermist is looking at the same **** pictures we all can find with a simple google search, not one of these people have any actual hands on proof, they have opinions like all of us and that is it. Take that for what it’s worth but that’s the simple truth.
In my opinion the real question is where and how did he come into possession of this possible world record animal, which is obviously open to 24 years of rumors, speculation, and everything in between. You have to ask yourself is any one human being possibly good enough to kill deer, and consistently, that are on average 80” larger than what I read should represent the area of which he hunts… can any one hunter be good enough to kill deer 180”-200” in an area that supposedly a 120” buck would be a major accomplishment? To me this is the real question…. is he the real deal… are people just jealous, who knows, like a lot of things in life I believe the answer lies in the middle, I think he was a great hunter, I think the actual buck was real, I don’t believe in how or where he killed it, that’s my 2 cents.

I wish Kevin would have gotten into the facts surrounding the guys who saw it first hand and said it was real. He didn’t go over that at all in the last two episodes which seems like a big part of the puzzle. Overall, it was a lot of fun to listen in. I think your probably right @Topdog .. there is too much going against Mitch for me to believe it was legit. And the likelihood of a guy pulling world-class bucks out of that part of the states is so slim (like winning the lottery 3 times slim). But if people actually had eye witness of the buck then it must have come from somewhere.

it does seem that some of those bucks he took were definite fakes tho.

the rompola buck is a record, either way. its bigger than hanson buck. and i believe its a real buck. i dont think it was altered.

The more I read about the big buck hunting industry, the more I realize there's a lot of scummy people running around out there. I swear there's a spectrum of deer scores that's the "fun zone" where it's low enough to not get a magazine article written about you and random people knocking on your door but big enough to put on the wall and be proud of. I think anything over 170 almost a burden to the average dude. One picture on facebook with you and a giant and it spreads like wildfire. Personally I wouldn't want that kind of heat on me, but at the same time I've never had Mathews throwing free bows at me to endorse their product because I shot a 220" monster with a Mathews.

I have not listened to that last podcast yet but I plan on doing it soon. I’ve read a lot about Rompolla and I agree with @Topdog, Rompolla is a good hunter but there is something that he is hiding about the circumstances with that buck. Many years ago in the early 80’s we had a monster drop tine buck near where we lived he probably was at least a 180 inch deer. My brother in law got one picture of him before there elders trail cams and made the mistake of showing a few people. We never saw that buck again and never knew if anyone got him. The rack was never found, who would believe me though unless you saw it yourself? This is in heavily pressure western New York before food plots and trail cams and everything else.

This is somewhat off topic but it made me ponder while listening to the rompola story.

I am 28, and I only got serious about archery at 18 so much of my hunting life has been around trail cams and having a cell phone with satellite imagery… While these are both incredible tools I have much respect for my dads generation.. there has been so much change in such a short amount of time and it doesn’t seem like we will ever go back to how it used to be. There is really something to Rompolas knowledge and other guys of his era that I think ought to be respected even if he did fake the big one..

I wish he wouldn’t have (if he did), but he was still a forerunner for what archery is today and there’s something to that.
