Mobile Cold Weather Clothing

I have the FL Uncompahgre set and the Kuiu down Pro set and 30 and above I love the FL. Below 30 the Kuiu down set keeps me toasty even compressed under an outer layer. I also have some hiking 800 fill that works just as well and is much less expensive. (The colors don't matter if you are using it for an insulation mid-layer).

So i bow hunt MN so I hunt mid Sept through the end of the year. Early Season can be in the low 80's late season in the teens. FL's corrugate guide pants and jacket are pretty much always on me on my walk in with either no insulation or as much as the kiln plus the furnace merino wool layers. When it's cold... highs in the 30's... i carry in the sanctuary bibs and jacket in my pack. I haven't invested in a lot of the mid temperature setups First Lite has but I'm probably going to grab the source jacket at some point and one of their foundry pants... haven't decided on corrugate foundry or catalyst foundry.... I don't typically stick with one brand for everything, but I think all of these companies have started to really assemble kits that work well together. I was between Sitka and FL when I started getting new gear and Sitka's stuff is just SOOOO expensive... pretty happy with FL.. only issue is that I'm 5'9" and have a 34 in waist... their gear runs a bit long and it's a lot of money to not be able to get a 34x30... but I'll make peace with it.

Your outer layers have to be sized to not compress any puffy layers. You also should be able to use a lighter shell because of the puffy insulation factor. BUT, yes, you are correct that a compressed puffy is basically useless.
Re-phrase: a fully compressed puffy is basically useless, and efficiency of warmth-to-weight will decrease the more that it is compressed.
