Muddy 20" Pro Sticks anything better in climbing sticks?

Found some Muddy 20" sticks for sale for $145 for four with shipping. My questions are is this a decent deal and are these sticks good ones or does anyone know of better ones I can buy? I have LW and API climbing systems and sticks but are looking for lighter than the API and shorter than the LW sticks and these fill both requirements quite well.

Thanks,
Art.

Do yourself a favor, bite the bullet and get 8 double steps from eastern woods outdoors to replace those heavy folding contraptions then you’ll have the perfect sticks that you’re looking for.

I have a set of muddy pros. I only have experience with those and the latest model Hawk Heliums, so take that into consideration. The pros are ok. There is a little more play in the steps than I care for. I really only notice it when I'm standing on the top step setting the tether, but don't care for it.

The sticks are heavy for the length, but the cam cleat sets really fast.

Thanks for the replies.
I forgot to mention I'm kind of a big guy at 6'2" and 245-250lbs, is that a factor that will affect the muddy sticks stability?
Dalton916,
I have seen the pics of the replacement steps you speak of but no experience with them. Do you have to purchase new bolts as well with the steps and can you buy the steps and bolts as one purchase from EWO?

Are the Muddys you found from their site directly or elsewhere? If it's from elsewhere just be careful that they're not selling you Muddy Sticks from their recall years.

To check if the muddys are from the recall years, you'll want to check for two things.

1. If the color of the rope is orange
2. If the stick has 1 post or 2 posts on the part that goes against the tree

If you scroll through the images at the link above it explains it.

To my knowledge the new batch of Muddy Pro Sticks Sid directly from their site addressed these issues but it doesn't hurt to email then to reconfirm.

You won’t find new recall sticks from 2012. They have reclaimed almost all of them. There were only 1500 unit out in the public if I recall correctly. Good luck talking to a human at Muddy. I hear it’s really difficult these days.

I love muddy pros. I think the older models were made better than the new models. Better Quality control. The cam cleat attachment is the best available quick and clean. The folding steps are the heavy part of the stick.
If you get some check all the bolts makes sure there snug. Check all the parts on all the sticks and make sure they are identical.

Happy climbing. Yes there are lighter sticks out there but I still say none better from the factory

I used LW sticks for years and switched to the Muddy Pro this year and I absolutely love them. They pack better, have a superior attachment system and the double step is great. I use 3 and with my aider I get to 22’ - 25’

I have 6 post-recall, older, pre-merger, muddy pro sticks. I will not give them up. I keep coming back to them. Check the bolts and tighten them up every so often. That helps with the play / slop on them.

Folding steps are heavy. My sticks weigh in at 3lbs each(and I added 8’ ropes and stealth stripped them. I keep going back and forth between getting the Dano steps and standoffs. Maybe one day I will. I guess it is deal with the extra weight for more streamlined carry or modify them for lighter weight and deal with a less streamlined carry.

I think longbowwoman (hope I got the name right) modified her muddy pros with DanO steps and light standoffs. She got the weight down substantially.

As was mentioned earlier, they are the best out of the box and the cam cleat is awesome.

I also have a pre merger set that I’ve had for several years now. I think they are great. I have toyed with the idea of replacing the steps for the DanO steps and the stand offs, but at that point it becomes a significant investment and I may just wait to see what OOAL comes out with next year and buy a full set of them if I am that concerned with cutting weight. They muddys are super quick and easy to set up.

If you decide to move your API's, I would be interested.

I’m actually currently running a set of the pros. Which I just realized are the recalled models. All 8 of my standoffs are the single rail.
That being said, I use a CAYG aider and I get to hunting height super easily. They pack down small with my podium on the meat shelf of my pack and are super easy and quick to set up. I don’t mind the trade off in weight for packability. I just switched to these from lone wolves and the muddies are far superior if you ask me.
Now I just gotta survive this hunting trip on them.

Does not mean they are recall. Do your research. Check the serial number

I just looked at the recall notice where it was if you have the orange rope and single post standoffs, it is a recall. I’ll check the SN when I get down on them but they seem to be me ting the criteria at this point.FDF47CC7-2FF9-4A28-BEA4-8E5667E0AEEC.png611EF4B8-DDDC-4AE4-B240-6A1E71ED42A4.png

What year are your sticks? The rope on yours looks different? Do they meet all the criteria in the photo? They kept using the single post standoffs post recall

I only bought these a few months back, direct from Muddy, but it seems they meet the criteria. Called Muddy to speak directly with them, haven't heard back yet.

Your good unless they had them on the shelf from 2012. Be the longest wait you’ve ever had! Lol

Well that's why I never checked them against the recall... figured there was no possible way. Was checking for a friend today and realized that they seem to meet the criteria. I will follow up with Muddy just to make double sure... better safe than sorry. Stranger things have happened I suppose.

I talked to muddy last year and they told me that even if the sticks have a brown stem, and a orange line in the rope does mean they are recalled. They told me only if they have no SN# on the stick they are the recalled ones.
