Multiple Climbing Methods and Sets of Gear

It's not something that happens all the time but a lot of years we will have 8-12 pre-sets hunt for the season. Last year had one strap on a climbing stick damaged in 3 spots. Didnt catch it until I was going to hang that stand and set of sticks this year. That stick became the bottom stick lol. It'll get a new strap this off season.

How’s the Sladder working for ya? @kyler1945 seems to be really enjoying his. Lol.

We may not need the latest and greatest, but it doesn’t mean efficiencies can’t be had. What to do about it is personal choice.

I like having multiple systems. I’m proficient with multiple systems. That’s not for everyone.
So far I like it but I haven’t climbed with it as much as I want. I meant to add to my response in this thread that my goal this year is to incorporate the Sladder exclusively for my goin hang and hunt setups.

I hope that aint skwerl poop. Just to be safe, I may stick with fixed blades though. ;)

I guess you’re not in the Caymans from the sale of that hunk. Still no leads on what it is?

No, havent been back and didnt ask anybody in an "official" position because, well mostly because if it were something of interest they would be down there in the huntin woods where they dont belong. Would like to take a hammer and chisel back and get a small piece but that is agin the rules of the area. Cant be removing anything legally and dont wont to have to explain how a little piece just broke off. Best bet I can figure is to just leave it be. And for the record, if I could buy the caymans with cash, I wouldnt have an ounce of desire to be there EVAR.

Does anyone ever find themselves longing for multiple saddles, packs/pouches, and the associated accessories for different climbing methods? This is probably along the lines of not being minimal and worrying more about gear than actual deer hunting, but sometimes I don’t know until I’m ready to leave the truck if I want to multi-stick, one-stick, or SRT/rope climb. At that point I don’t want to fiddle with stuff to get my gear packed, minimized, and organized I just want to go hunting.

Sometimes I think back and say I used to do this with a single LW climber (or alpha and sticks) and no extra gear besides a bow, knife, and small flashlight. Now somehow in an effort to be become more mobile, lighter, and ninjaesque I have dozens of ropes, devices, hitches, and sticks to sort through every time I want to get in a tree. I need help.
I am thinking about a low drag saddle setup this year to allow for a more streamlined scout until I find ultra fresh sign then hang situation. I still have my old phantom which was a comfortable to walk in and I have a ROS, so I am most of the way there. I do not expect to have have any long sits in this setup, I am too spoiled by my Orion for that. I will need to add a 2TC setup and a minimalistic saddle mounted pouch to carry it in. I am completely happy with my Orion, Ultimate One Stick/Ultimate Platform and EDP for the vast majority of my hunts and do not plan any changes to that setup for next year. Lately I have been having been seeing more deer hunting really fresh sign where in the past, I would pass the fresh sign to keep looking or to go to a predetermined destination.

Currently using the Mini-Drey/Killdeer setup with the Marsupial stretch pockets for this situation...

I've been saddle hunting for 4 seasons, now, and still use the same setup I started with. As cool as some of the other methods look, I have resisted the urge to try the other stuff because what I have works and I've gotten familiar with using it, even in the dark. I like keeping it simple, even if it's not the latest and greatest.
Not sure if you already said what you use somewhere in the thread but curious what your setup is that you’ve stuck with all along?

In my early days of saddle hunting I think I tried (aka bought) every method of climbing I saw to try out. I really believe this is the "hidden cost" and most difficult part of transitioning to saddle hunting. I have spent way more money on climbing equipment than saddles. Finding the best fit climbing method for your situation is the hardest part of saddle hunting. There may not be a single one of them that's perfect for all your applications but eventually you'll find one that is acceptable for most of them.

For me that best all around method was one sticking, that's not to say its the best all around method for others as everyone's needs are different. There's still times I think wow, my WE stepps would be perfect here, or I may be on private and think I should be using my spurs here. Regardless, I always stick with my primary as, first off, that gear is already packed and read to go. Second (and more importantly) I think its important for safety to develop a repeatable system and stick with it. After three years using only my current climbing system I have a set process that I'm completely comfortable with and can repeat every time. I can honestly say I've finally quick looking for an alternative.

I can think of several new handles for ya that fit both saddle hunting and your current situation... lol:
HanginSolo
onesticking
missinit
onegotaway
lostinthebush
hanginlow
smokedem
cullbuck
stuckem
didntgo20
smackdown
I might have to order a sladder from you after this brilliant post.

WE steps (8 pack gets me as high as I need to be). Five Ameristeps on an OCB strap is my ROS. Gear hooks on an OCB strap to hang bow and pack. And of course, my saddle.

No. I go the other way, I want my setup to be as versatile as possible. One setup to learn and memorize and get proficient with, with which I can hunt any scenario I might find myself in.
This season was my first in my Treehopper Recon. Extra-long webbing bridge with the tails tied together to make a short bridge. 2 dump pouches and a dog leash in a canteen pouch. Add a MOLLE waist pack with my rope, tether, footloops, and throwline; my 1-stick and ROS are strapped to it. Bino harness and chest holster. Only other thing is a pack; if I don't need layers it's a Camelbak and if I do it's a rucksack. I can 1-stick, hang presets, SRT (awkwardly), 2TC (painfully slowly), self-rescue, or overcome any other challenge I found myself in, without having to head back to the truck because I'm wearing the wrong setup to climb the particular tree I want. If plans change due to weather or hunting pressure or any other factor, no big deal, I've got the right equipment for it.
