I had an opportunity to head out with the muzzleloader yesterday and had an awesome hunt. I’ve had this one particular doe in mind that has busted me several times this year and my goal for this hunt was to put her down! I had a steady SW wind which is perfect for this bedding area that she calls home, so I took my time sneaking in to 60 yards from the edge of it where I could get a good shot. I found a good poplar tree and climbed up with my spikes and settled in about 2:30. At 4:00 I spotted a deer coming out of the bedding and could tell right away it was the doe I was after. You know those deer that look in trees for you and are freaked out by just about anything? Yeah, that is this doe.

She slowly worked her way up the trail with four others behind her and I was sitting behind the tree in my Mantis with the gun on the left side of the tree ready to go. She stepped into my lane at 60 yards and Stopped on her own. The gun cracked and she was down in 15 yards.

I have to be honest that doe had me shook up just as much as any buck I’ve killed this year. Those old, crafty does are a challenge!

This is deer #4 from the saddle this year, and my 80th whitetail. Pretty dang cool!

Congrats Fling - I have a couple does like that - going out Saturday with the longbow to try to remove her from the gene pool :)

Killing one with a bow in the late season is a big challenge! Go get em!

yep - since we have almost 2 1/2 months of gun season the deer are definitely nocturnal and hidden in those deep poackets. Havn't hunted deer with a gun in several decades - I'll probably just be taking the bow for a walk and scouting mroe than anything but hey that beats watching TV any day right ;)

Good size doe. The way some of those doe are its almost like taking out a coyote during turkey season.

Congratulations! Did you age her? A 5 or 6 yr old doe is a tough kill.

I haven't yet but will pull her jaw bone and see. I've killed some monster does in this area but never aged any of them. Wish I had done it now.

If and when I get busted, it is almost always a doe that does it. Bucks to me are near as weary or sharp as an old cagy doe.

They certainly make the biggest "scene" when they bust you. An old buck usually just slinks off without making much of a commotion. This old doe busted me one day during early season and I bet she blew for a solid half hour. I'd prefer a missile launcher on a hunt like that! :D

Had a doe bust me last weekend. I don’t think it was that old of a doe but I was placed in a pine tree with absolutely no cover within 20 feet of me. She had the most pathetic blow but it wasn’t a lack of trying. Her front feet left the ground and her ears flopped every time she blew. It was kind of funny watching but after she hopped out of sight and was still blowing 20 minutes later I was kind of wishing I had silenced it with my 308 when she first started. I once watched a doe walk up on a fox squirrel and freak out and blow forever. The other deer didn’t pay attention to her so she must have done it often. It’s great you got the doe you were looking for. I usually take a couple does a year and it’s usually does that have made it a habit of busting me. I try to leave no witnesses.
