I use a wire carabiner since not really load bearing. Much easier to open/close and very quiet.

please don't use wire gate carabiners for life support....climbers use them when they have a stack of them and so one can let go and they are caught by the next one.....i can take the rope from a non-locking carabiner with the flick of the wrist without even touching the wire gate.....they are not safe for tether, bridge, or lineman's lanyard...anywhere where a single failure will send you to the ground

With the JRB cinch, the carabiner is never life support, it's just a block that can't slide through the rappel ring and couldn't be side loaded. The one I use is 12KN. It is only loaded when pulling down rappel rope at end of climb and most of us use a light wire type carabiner on our pull down rope anyway so don't see the difference.

He was using it for the lock on the "JRB Cinch" if I recalled his previous reply. Considering the application I may be alright with it for rappel. I wouldn't call it unsafe, but it definitely has a little more risk. I would agree with the applications you said though (tether, bridge, LB). They would be considered un-safe use to me as well.
