Good morning. New guy here from DE. Been hunting out a climber for years with all the limitations that come with that. I'm a bigger guy and always assumed saddles we a small guy game until I saw a guy my size at my archer club practicing with a saddle. I was able to try his and now have the bug. I had no idea of the quagmire I was getting into. I figured ok... grab saddle, platform, steps, and ropes and I'm good to go. I had no idea of the amount of options! Now in a state of analysis paralysis reading here. Good thing I have some time until September. Good to be here.

Welcome from Mississippi! I too hunted out of climbers for years. First Summits then I got a Lone Wolf Assault II hand climber. I still use the Lone Wolf from time to time. You can indeed just grab the basic equipment and off you go but that is not the usual option that many of us go for around here, for better or worse. It might be a good idea to focus on the saddle first and then dive off into the myriad ways of getting up the tree. Have you bought a saddle yet? Have fun and stay safe.

I haven't purchased anything yet. My goal was to get a saddle / tether / lineman belt and platform. That way I can get started close to ground level to gain confidence and figure out what I like and don't like. Also to get used to shooting from the tether then move on to climbing sticks.

On a side note, the only company I had heard of prior to seeing this site was Tethrd. Now I see that there are literally tons of options. I was originally looking at a Phantom XL saddle but the Cruzr XC looks way more my speed. It sounds like most of the guys here end up trying many different saddle to find the perfect one.

I have a Cruzr XC and it is a very good saddle, one of the most often recommended. I also have a Treehopper Recon. The Cruzr is a pleated single panel, and the Recon is a 2 panel. I have gravitated to the Recon since it is more minimalist and is more adjustable. I am a smaller framed guy at 5'11" and 150 pounds so bear that in mind also. Your best bet, if possible, would be to attend a saddle hunter meetup in your area and try out a bunch of different things. Saddles are a tough thing to buy since you have to gather information and ask questions and then at some point you just have to pull the trigger and buy one. If it doesn't work for you, you can likely sell it for about what you have in it. That is the upside.

Thanks for all the advice. Should I just keep an eye out in the member meetup forum or are there other planned meetups around the country?

Yes, do a search for Delaware meet ups and depending on how far you might be willing to travel, maybe some surrounding states. There is also a map on here somewhere that shows where members are located geographically.

I have a used tree hopper recon for sale. I’ve only hunted out of it maybe 10 times. It’s in really good condition.

Welcome from Ky I recently purchased a latitude xl I wanted the back support may change later on but that’s what I decided to start with

Welcome fellow first stater. What county sir?

There are enough of us to do a saddle fling.

I still have my classic TrophyLine if interested. Price negotiable. It allowed me to get comfortable with the concept before moving on. Still used it occasionally for cold sits, but I have other options now.
