Wisconsin DNR used to enforce that tag notching rule with a vengeance, now we don't even have to tag deer...go figure.
We're kinda the same way. As long as the tag is somewhere in the vicinity of the carcass, it's good enough. Once I notch mine, it stays in my pocket through the butchering and I throw it in the cooler on the way home just in case.Wisconsin DNR used to enforce that tag notching rule with a vengeance, now we don't even have to tag deer...go figure.
Lead ammo ban on public land headed our way in NY, supposed to be almost a sure thing, mandatory blaze orange also during big game season, that could be this year. I reload so looks like I will be rocking Barnes bullets next year on public, I feel for all the guys that don’t reload with the ammo shortage already and when this lead ban passes it will be a mess.Already been doing that in NY. If your knife can’t cut a tag, I don’t expect it to field dress much for ya either..

I’m stocked up for war, but thanks I appreciate the offer!!!I got a box of .308 200gr X-bullets if you need 'em.
I found a load i like better for that rifle...
We had to wear our licenses on our back up until either last year or the year before. I still do it because.....38 years of doing so.It's such a strange patchwork of requirements. We've had to notch tags going back as far as I can remember but there are also states that require you to pin your tag on the back of your jacket which to me seems ridiculous.

As was already stated, our license year runs from July 1st until June 30th of the following year. When you purchase your license you automatically get your buck tag, your fall turkey tag and your spring turkey tag.My neighbor is from PA, has explained it a few times and still seems like a mess.
Here, the state is parceled out into zones and each zone lands in one of 5 categories depending upon estimated deer population:
Lottery-1 deer, either sex with a set limit of tags offered
Buck only
Hunters choice-1 deer limit
Managed-2 deer limit, 1 buck only
Intensive-3 deer limit, 1 buck only
Aside from lottery, you can buy any over the counter, just can't use it the same day as purchased. The area I hunt flips between Managed and Intensive so I usually buy 2 tags heading up to camp the day before. Never bought more than 2 tags since 2 deer hanging keeps me plenty busy.
Edit: We also have a 6th category which I forgot about: Unlimited Anterless but these are for CWD zones. You can also take 3 bucks in these zones, 1 each with archery, rifle and muzzleloader.
He had mentioned a few things have changed regarding how the seasons are laid out but it still seems like such a disorganized (over-organized) mess.As was already stated, our license year runs from July 1st until June 30th of the following year. DMAP (Deer Management Assistance Program) antlerless tags are OTC, they are for specific properties, and these can sell out fast.
The rest of the state is broken into several WMU's, for which you apply for antlerless tags. First day that the county treasurers will start accepting applications and issuing tags is July 12th this year.
If you need reading glasses then you really should be carrying them anyway...almost a requirement for difficult blood trails.Michigan has a cutout notch requirement too (for as long as I can remember). This is why I need to carry reading glasses with me to the woods. I can't read the darn thing without them let alone get the notches cut right. The whole tag is about the size of your standard business card and notching the antler points takes some gentle touch with the knife blade. This is the back of one of my 2021 deer tags.

I think its a generic tag layout also given that the months are all covered. My turkey tag is setup the same way, just not including the antler point info."How Taken: Gun, Bow, Trap" You can trap deer in Michigan?
That's definitely true. With my distance correcting contacts in (bi-focally challenged) my vision comes into focus at about 5 feet. I can see the ground pretty clearly standing but like you say, if its a particularly challenging trail and I need to get close to the ground I definitely need my glasses. If you need reading glasses then you really should be carrying them anyway...almost a requirement for difficult blood trails.
The worst regulation by far though was no Sunday hunting.

Correct me if I am wrong but I’m pretty sure that wearing your hunting license on your back is exempt in Northern tier for whatever crazy reason, unless something has changed with the new proposals coming out soon, I just double checked the DEC site and it still reads we are excluded up North.NY has always and still requires you to wear a back tag in the "middle of your back" when doing any form of hunting. You can either notch or mark (with indelible ink) your carcass tag(s) upon harvest. We always tell the students, bring three pens with you. I have one in my kill kit, one in my left pants cargo pocket and one in my breast pockets. Technically, if you are hunting without a pen or something to cut your carcass tag and you have possession of game that has a tagging requirement, you're in violation of the law. After you ensure the animal is dead, the next thing in NY they require you to do is fill out the carcass tag. Turkey's must be tagged. Deer and other big game the carcass tag must be completed but you do not have to attach the tag until you get it home, to your vehicle, etc.
Learn something new every day. I thought NY was the same statewide. I have never understood the bag tag requirement as about 20 feet away it gets tough to read the ID number anyway.Correct me if I am wrong but I’m pretty sure that wearing your hunting license on your back is exempt in Northern tier for whatever crazy reason, unless something has changed with the new proposals coming out soon, I just double checked the DEC site and it still reads we are excluded up North.
