New Sewing machine

I just went and picked up a singer 401a here locally. (Anyone have one?)

I read a ton of good reviews online and am excited about what’s to come, but I need to order all the basics.

Can anyone lead me in the right direction as far as thread, bobbin, etc I need to order. Here are a few pics.

I have a singer 99k. I’m using #69 thread and 18 needle. Not sure about bobbins for your machine. I’m new to all this, but made up a mock sling strap with a box stitch and a straight stitch on a inner webbing like the waist belt. Going to pull on it with my truck tomorrow and see how it holds up

Update on the pull test. Simply pulling with the truck in 4low (F-150), it did not break. Took 4 or five short snatches (2ft) to get it to break and as you can see the stitching mostly held up, broke where it was looked over my trailer ball on the truck. It put my mind at ease. These things are way overbuilt and I see no way to break it from a human fall or regular usage

Don’t know crap about your machine but Im thrilled for ya. My 8 year old son wanted one for his birthday last year and I rolled my eyes, a little embarassed my boys hearts desire was a sewing machine. Putting my pride aside I did a bunch of research and got him a Brother on line. The dude was right, the thing is awesome. I may be using it more than him. At this point Im only specializing in stuff sacks and various bags but its a ton of fun and we’re both getting pretty good.

There are a couple fellas on this forum that are excellent and have a ton of knowledge. Try finding the thread about DIY Saddles. One of the guys in that string is an absolute wizard and was kind enogh to turn me on to a few resources for ripstop and general gear making.

Good retirement plan. Get that kid started thread injecting early and he will be able to retire by the time he's 30 from selling stuff to saddle hunters on this website alone.

I have the 403a and I found that gutterman Tara and Mara both run great through it. I tried mil spec #69 but it did not do well but I also didn’t try to mess with my tensioning very long because I was in the middle of a project.
