Hello everyone,

I'm new to deer hunting all the way around. I had a blast hunting last year for the first time killed my first deer at 34 years old, yada yada, now im hooked. It's awesome. I bought a saddle over the summer and I am torqued for bow season to come in in Virginia. This whole scent control idea has my head spinning. Last year I got a basic scent free kit from Wally world with detergent and spray and all that. I had old camo that was given to me that I used. I washed it with the detergent, put it in rubbermaid tote with lid until I was going hunting. Before the hunt I took a scent free shower, and wore scent free deoderant. If I was hunting after work I took a scent free wipe and wiped down put my clothes on, spra and went in the woods. I didn't invest a whole lot of thought in it, and surely didn't invest a ton of money in clothing, ozone, and the like. Am I headed on the right path? If it ain't broke don't fix it? Thanks for any and all advice ahead of time.

If you were seeing deer and not getting busted, it should work. Some people go all out on eliminating their scent, and other just mask their scent. As long as you hunt the wind you should be fine either way

Welcome to the site. There is a plethora of articles written on the this subject. Everyone has an opinion. But this your first fork in the road. And you're about to go down a rabbit hole, but the question you should be asking yourself is "can I fool a whitetail's nose by buying a product".

If your answer is "yes" there is a lot of information all over the internet for you to educate yourself. And an even longer line of people willing to take your money.

If your answer is "no". You'll have to learn how to play the wind. In which case there is a lot information all over the internet. And plenty of people willing to take your money to teach you!

Just the fact that you are aware of odor reduction and wind indicates you are on the right path, but there are a LOT of details to odor reduction. Its not just showering, scentlok, and sprays.
And wind patterns are a lot more complex that most guys realize.
There is no reason to make it an "either-or". Reduce as many odor aspects as you can AND learn wind behavior. Use both to your advantage.
And remember this...the majority of odor busts occur without the hunter ever realizing that it happened.
And welcome from PA.

Welcome ...scent is a deep, complex topic. I'd scour the archives and read as much as possible. Lots of good intel on all sides of the subject. Figure out what gives you confidence and works and go from there. Good luck this season.
