New Treehopper "Mini" Hand Drill Housings

I can't tell you how many products over the years that I kick myself for not buying multiples when they were available.

Ya, if I could buy a half dozen predator platforms, I would... but I’ll have to make due with one and hope they don’t discontinue it and I don’t break it.

I didn’t touch my spurs at all last season due to the EZ-Kut and CF bolts.... gonna upgrade from my EZ-Kut to this, and if I don’t use the spurs for another season, they will hit the classifieds.

Go ahead and sell 'em. ;)

Seriously, if you can penetrate bark there's really not a drawback. Time up + time down averages out so that spurs don't really win in the speed category. It cost me $6 a tree to preset to 20'. And nothing else touches a drill and bolts in the weight/packability category.

Is the mini hand drill a significant upgrade on the current drill?

Yes.
It isn't just a smaller version of the larger drill. The mini, IMO, has some very desirable differences.
The bit is easier to replace due to the screw retainer. The large drill has a pin, which is possible to remove but not nearly as easy as the screw. Hey, stuff happens. We drill into trees on old farmland that may have all kinds of metal hidden inside the tree growth, right? Old fence, nails, etc. It's not crazy to think that a bit could be damaged when drilling into a tree, especially the lowest 5 feet or so. Anyone who has cut enough firewood will tell you they have hit some mystery piece of metal buried within a tree growth. I want to be able to change a bit in the field. The last thing I want is to be a mile or more from my truck and damage a bit and be dead in the water. I carry a spare bit and an Allen wrench in my pack.

Other improvements the mini has is a beefier spring and a better collar to keep chips from working their way into the sleeve.

You can have my mini...when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

I need to check with Mark, but I want to say he mentioned a mini-style bit stop and sleeve for the full size at some point. Combining that with the full's longer handle (more leverage) and tapered bit (less resistance) would be sweet.

Also, Warren Womack mentioned in a separate thread that his original woodpecker drilled a shallower hole than the new Treehopper and EZ-Kut. Shallower hole = less turning. I want to say he was having to turn a woodpecker 50ish times vs 60ish with an EZ-Kut. Add it all up and that's 100 fewer revolutions per 10 holes you drill.

God damn it. I just bought a old drill and 20 bolts and had them shipped to my cousin in Texas to ship up here. Now I got to get another drill to him.....

Never ends

Just for the record: I've used the Woodpecker drill for 36 years without any issues.
Woodpecker drill is 5/8" shorter than the EZ-Kut.
Woodpecker drill takes 56 turns for a finished hole.
EZ-Kut drill takes 73 turns for a finished hole.
That's a difference of 17 turns per hole which equals 170 for 10 bolts. That's a lot of extra unnecessary drilling.

Does the new mini have the folding knob/handle like in the video?
I think he has them now. And yes, they will be an up-charge at some point...not sure if that is the current policy or if the uncharge if for orders made in the future. I think the folders will be around $11 extra?? Well worth it IMO. I like mine.

Any idea when they'll be on his website I just checked the website and I didn't see a mini with a folding knob/handle. I want one but I want the folding handle as well...... guess I'll just keep waiting.

I just texted Mark. They currently have everything for the mini except the bits and they should be available around the end of May.
