Hello everyone, I’m contemplating getting into saddle hunting. I currently use a LW hang on with sticks/aider mods but like the appeal of the saddle. Im just trying to research what would be best, buy commercial saddle, buy sitdrag or make my own sitdrag. I’m a larger guy (6’1” 245lbs 36” waist) and have concerns of comfort. I have watched several videos from g2, DIY Sportsman and have been reading through threads on this site. At the momoment I’m leaning towards making my own saddle setup. Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I'm a huge advocate of the SitDrag, Fleece Saddle, all you need is a rock climbing harness and one or both of those options. You can make a fleece saddle for about 5 bucks. It's really hard to beat for the price, especially for folks just getting into it.

I can't comment on comfort for bigger guys, I'm 6'0" 185, maybe someone else on here can comment on comfort.

I put together a general overview of saddle hunting and the many options, I think it's definitely work a read for new saddle hunters.

Thank you for the response. I will take a look at thread when I get a chance.

Welcome aboard. I would tell you that I have sat in the kestrel for several hours. I was totally comfortable.

Welcome. Where in Maine? I’m at the southern border in NH if you are close by you are welcome to give my Kestrel size 2 a test hang. I was fortunate to have one of the guys here swing by my place and let me hang for a bit before I purchased one. I am still a total greenhorn. I have been in it for no longer than an hour at a time yet but I’m a bit bigger 6’/265lbs 40”waist and I’m comfortable. The only thing I ask in return is you help advocate for NH residents that pay Maine income tax be allowed to purchase instate licenses....

Well, we run up to Biddeford quite a bit visiting a friend and my wife's family is up in the Searsport/Belfast area so I'm always travelling through. I'll hit you up if I am headed that way. Like I said, I had someone do the same for me and I don't mind paying it forward. The attitudes and demeanor of everyone here is just amazing. I can't wait till the kids are a bit older and I am a bit more accomplished so i can garner the confidence to attend one of the organized hunts..they sound like a blast. Another side note..I hijack my wife's facebook looking for hunting items all of the time so theres a good chance I'll be scouting gear from marketplace in your area at some point. haha

Send me a message or text if you are ever in the Portland area. We can meet out for coffee or a beer and talk hunting.
