Nose to the ground Virginia, a free blood tracking and recovery service

HUGE thanks to Nose to the Ground, Chris, and most importantly Izzy for their help today. Wouldn’t have recovered this deer without her and now I can sleep tonight.

Big thanks to @Exhumis as well for getting my Facebook-less self hooked up with them today.

He was quartering much harder than I realized, and ended up with a single lung/liver/guts hit. The exit was plugged up because of that and blood was close to nonexistent. I knew it wasn’t a great shot, but also knew it was definitely a lethal hit. Left him overnight and tried to get on blood this morning but lost it again. Ended up deciding to find a tracking dog which was the ticket.

There wasn’t much for her to work with trail-wise so we ended up working through some of the logical ways he would have gone. Got down into a creek bottom and she picked up the trail and was on him. Found him buried in some mountain laurel.

For those in VA, definitely keep N2TG in mind if you need help with a recovery. For everyone, don’t be like me and not know where to go to find a dog/have contact info until the day you need them.

Didn’t go as planned, but first saddle deer in the books.
