Hey guys, I hope everyone's season was everything they hoped for and everyone is healthy! Just looking for a little direction here. I am in the process of revamping my YT channel and I still have some content from 2020 to post, but I need some ideas. I want to do more videos based on saddle hunting, how to, tips/tricks, etc. but I am curious as to what you guys like to watch on YT and what you guys think would pull more traffic? I want the channel to be helpful/informative as well as good hunting content. Spring time we are doing some videos on meat smoking and foraging. Ice fishing content is about to go up and some other odds and ends.

Just want to hear from the people! Thanks!

I think there’s quite a few gear review videos around on all kinds of the latest hottest saddle hunting stuff. But more is not a bad thing. Another perspective on things is always helpful i think.

What I would like to see more of is some strategy on how and why to saddle hunt with your gear, not just how to set it up and how much you can move around the tree. For instance, “I’m setting up in this location because of this cover over there and this terrain feature. The saddle and platform will be good for this because I can cover this way and that way, where it would be limiting or hard to do in a tree stand setup because XYZ.” Or, “in this setup at this location, a saddle setup is most beneficial because XYZ... gear, terrain, far distance to get to, I have to climb under this, over that terrain to get here, etc.” Sounds simple maybe but actually being able to see someone doing it sometimes helps connect the dots for some of us that don’t have a lot of time to get out and practice with our gear.

Hopefully that makes some sense.

I'll second @Westdesign03 thoughts. So much of saddle hunting is focused on the gear and not the thing that matters the most...the hunt. Maybe show the process from A to Z for some of the new guys. Things like: scouting, packing gear in, setting up, climbing a real tree (not a perfectly straight no limbed telephone pole), climbing down, hiking back, etc. You could do some time lapse for our short attention spans or do a few part series.
When I'm not hunting or can't get out hunting, it's fun watching other guys getting out there even if a shot wasn't taken or not much was seen.

Yeah for sure. I think the thing I value most in watching hunting YT videos is watching the process and the thought process of why they’re doing what they’re doing and the reason behind the decisions they make. That is HUGE for me. That’s why I love watching Dan’s videos so much. Because that’s what he always talks about almost exclusively. I don’t even care if they don’t get a shot or even see a deer for that matter most of the time.

Show us some of Maine and what makes hunting Maine different and cool. Would love to see you choose a big piece of public, do a onx plan, get out there and video tape sign and show if you were right or wrong. Hats something you can do off season.

A lot of good points so far!

I think doing a start to finish user video would be a good one! We could make a series and each episode would cover a different style, e.g. swamps, ridge country, thick forest, habitat transitions, select cuts, etc. In each episode have a guy pack a saddle and another pack a hang on to show the differences! How's that sound?

Also, @RainingBlades I see what you are saying but the sign in the snow during off season, especially in Maine, will be significantly different than it is during season. Deer change patterns rapidly up here around the end of August and don't really settle back in to a wintering/summer feed pattern until late Dec - Early May. If I applied my hunting tactics to a map during the off season I would be WAYYY off. BUT, I could apply them and show the sign from the rut, or what's not covered with snow. (Rubs, licking branches, scrapes if they are there.)

What I could do on your suggestion though is show why we like hunting Maine, what we have seen that is different from other states, and why we find it drawing us back into the woods every year?! E-scouting videos are usually around the same topics, ridge fingers, side hilling, feed, bedding, thermals, wind, sunrise/sunset and all that, but I could show how we apply it in Maine and how it may vary from the way other people apply it in their state.

Thanks for the outside perspectives all of you! I hope more people chime in cause now you got me thinking!

How about breaking down some of your successful past hunts with maps and strategies that payed off and how. Do one on your bear baiting techniques too. I have always enjoyed watching how other successful hunts come together. I think it is one of the best ways to learn.

Trying to use my Southern Maine tactics over downeast?! I will for sure, ill use fake maps with similar terrain features so the guys in my area that follow me around dont catch on!

Just draw out some maps with terrain features and such. Doesn't have to be technical. Just enough to get the strategy used through to the viewer. Then explain your strategy used and why it worked.

I am going to come at your question from a different direction. Produce the content you enjoy producing the most. I think if you start trying to do things that are outside your interest or comfort zone your content will suffer.

I want a video on hunting bears where you cannot bait as NY doesn't allow bear baiting. We tried for a nuisance permit as they were completely destroying the sawtooth oak trees this fall a full month before the October 1st bow opener and we could do nothing. The state felt that tree damage wasn't a nuisance. When they are destroying trees you planted purposely to attract and grow wildlife and I mean they are breaking the trees up completely!! We planted them in 2004 and this last couple of years they started to really produce acorns and the bears are just totally devastating these trees. I thought about predator calls and calling and may bear lures sprayed all over the place to make kind of scent bomb and maybe radiate like spokes of the wheel out from my saddle location near the sawtooths but didn't want to spend tons of money on scent you're just dumping on the ground.

Where you from? In my honest opinion. Keep the videos short and brief and honest. Dont do videos on somthing you dont ever use.
quality short info is what people want.
5 minutes max. People lose interest fast on opinions our unfactual information.
be yourself and dont jam products down peoples throats. You need this you need that.
ive been doing it for awhile but i just do it part time. Its why im sure i dont gave a big following.
really what it takes for a following is big horns hitting the dirt. Period.

I agree with the big antlers comment. When I shot my buck this year that video alone pulled 11k views in a few days and +160 subscribers. I have had a lot of people tell me to do full breakdown videos though. Which no one can do in 5 minutes. I agree that audience retention is tough, but by looking at what videos have the highest percentage it has helped me figure out what to cut and what to produce.

I would never force feed a product, I agree with you on this. I try the approach of just mentioning why I use a product and if I like it or not. All my videos are based on things I do regularly, I am just at a brain block for content because I have a TON of other things going on in life right now including kid #2 any day!

Thank you for your input, it is appreciated man, really! If you have anything that you'd like to see a video on just drop it here! If I have experience on the category I will see what I can do to get some content laid down.
