Ohio nonresident fees

For those who don’t know the Ohio nonresident license fees and tags have raised again. This year is going to be $260. Last year was $180. I’m a landowner in Ohio but a resident of West Virginia which requires me to purchase a license and tag just to hunt my own property. I’m not going to Ohio this year because of limited time off work.

260 is still a pretty good deal compare to most trophy deer states ..I spend around 500$ to hunt Kansas every year and usually anywhere from 500-1200$ for tags to hunt out west every fall.

I do think it’s BS that you own land here and still have to buy tags and lisc. To hunt your own land.

SC deer might be smaller, but I have 11 tags in hand and can get 2 more buck tags if I want them so I can get a helluva lot of meat in my freezer for a minimal amount of money.

Now, I fully understand the “big buck” appeal that a lot of these states have, but I can honestly tell you that I’ve hunted a lot of states and southeastern deer are more challenging than any you’ll run in to anywhere else.

Look at the SC nonresident fees. $350 to hunt public land and only one buck tag. Additional tags are $50 and up.

Congrats and good luck on your western and Kansas hunting trips. But us non-resident ohio hunters are looking at a 44% fee bump here levied by folks we can't vote for. If your taxes went up by that amount you'd be pretty worked up I bet.

Well no one is forcing you to come to ohio to hunt like they are my paying taxes lol...the prices were a bargain for many years..I’m not one of these anti non resident guys either I show at-least 2-3 guys around my area every year and help them anyway that I can. I really enjoy seeing those guys have success and have made some great friends over the years. I just think that Ohio is still i tremendous bargain at $260 when compared to Iowa, Illinois, Kansas is all. I really hate to hear that that fee increase is going to keep you enjoying our state though.

Hmmmmmm! So you're not going to be hunting Ohio this year, just pm your land location and I'll make sure it's still good for hunting. Lol, jk. Sorry to hear work is going to keep ya from coming up to hunt, and wow that is a big increase but it's still not horrible comparatively to other states. It does suck that you can't hunt your own land though. Good luck this year.

260 is a cheap tag. To be able to hunt it every year. Look at iowa!! Had 7something in a tag there after 3 years of points. Guess depends how much ya want it but 260 is cheap

Try paying for a NR Iowa tag, then tell me Ohio is expensive.
Ohio is a bargain for the class of bucks in that state.
But that's the problem... great deer and, for many, many years, affordable tags...but private land is now very hard to come by these days. I cherish the small acreages that I procured back in the 1990s. I treat those landowners like gold.

That’s not my angle here, sorry for the lack of clarity. I’m merely saying that’s it’s going to take a lot to get me to go out of state to hunt nowadays. It’s going to be about the company, not the deer.

Hopefully it cuts back on the public land pressure a little bit. I think it’s a fair price in regards to public land, but wouldn’t call it a bargain anymore though. I’ve never hunted Iowa, Kansas, or Illinois but I don’t think that’s a valid comparison. If the price did go up in comparison with those states I think the pressure would decrease and the public land hunting might be more comparable. Now if you’re talking private land, outfitters, and leases then maybe it would still be a bargain since those situations can be as good as any other state out there. So I do think it only made sense for them to raise the prices some imo. Now $350 for SC is ridiculous!

This year I am doing my first out of state hunt and am going to Ohio. I thought the price fair especially compared to other states.

Looking at it from my perspective...
I live in PA. Decent hunting here but the odds of seeing a 150 buck are not great. They exist, but 5 year old bucks are few and far between in the heavily hunted area where I live. Pressure is crazy here. Everyone hunts out the back door.
So, I can drive 2 hours, hunt Ohio, where I've had close calls with a legitimate 200" deer and the age class is much better than PA. I can also hunt on Sundays.
I also hunt Iowa when I can draw.
But its $50 per preference point, and 3 points is still not a guarantee in the zone I hunt. So, add $150-$200 to the $570 (if I remember correctly) for an NR license, and its over $700 for a tag. Plus another $2k for trespass fees and lodging (10 day hunt), and its almost 1,000 miles away. My Ohio gig is 120 miles from me. I can do 1/2 day hunts if I want.
For my arrangement, Ohio is a bargain.
If I had to give up hunting my home state in order to go to OH, it would be an easy decision for me. Go west young man.

I gave up hunting West Virginia and strictly hunted Ohio for 15 years. The last 10 years I have hunted the 17 acres I own and have taken 5 p&y bucks, lost another and missed a giant. Last year I started hunting WV Public land again and got a p&y buck. Still going to hunt Ohio but it will probably be every other year. I agree that the public land pressure will definitely drop over the next 10 years.
