One stick question…and a few more

Looking for some advice. Recently purchased a Trophyline Wingman and not sure what aider I want. Debating between a sewn aider from EWO or an Amsteel aider. 3 steps. What do ya’ll got? And has anyone replaced the standoffs with EWO standoffs? Does it give you much more room and is it worth it? And does anyone have the Latitude knee pads? Are they worth the price? I have Trophyline ones that I don’t hate but looking around. Also looking at multi tools. Never owned one but I WANT one. The Leatherman Signal has my attention. One more guys, lighted nocks?? I switched to Nocturnals last year and one died after minimal use and another after being carried off by a deer was dead within a few hours. Pretty disappointed. Bought a six pack of NAP Thunderglos off Camofire for $20. ONE of the 6 work! Unbelievable! Emailed NAP twice and crickets. I had some Nockouts a few years ago that worked great but didn’t care for how long they were. Tried some cheapies off Amazon that 4 of the 6 worked great but didn’t instill much confidence. But after my luck with the name brands may give them another try. Thanks, Matt

I’m 5’7 205lbs and I prefer the 3 step sewn aider with 15” spacing. Works in early season and late. For me, I could make my next move with the stick and the bottom step of the aider was a short move, which I preferred. Let me fully set the stick comfortably.

I got the UltimAider last year, I like that it had adjustable distances for the steps. I adjusted it a couple of times to my liking, so that was key.

I just purchased a Amsteel three step with the step distances that I ended up settling on with the UltimAider. The Amsteel is 6.5 ounces lighter, which is the main reason why I’m going for it.

After trying just about every aider option on the market I was out of money so I ended up building my own ultimaider out of stuff I had kicking around and then bought the legit deal when I had the money and I must say that the ultimaider is easily in my opinion the best design and most versatile for the job. As for nocks I don’t mean to be rude but are you sure there’s no human error? That’s a mighty fail rate unless you just have the worst luck lol. I’ve never had a nocktournal not work and the only lumenok I ever had that stopped working ended up getting cracked and filled up with water. Then the cheap eBay/Amazon specials are what 2 of my buddies run and they never had a single problem

How is it humanly possible to have human error? I bought a brand new 3 pack. I shot one maybe 10 times or so when tuning. Packed it up and a few months later when I went to shoot it again before the season, it didn’t work. So I had 2 working nocks left. I shot one into a deers shoulder and he carried it off glowing away. Backed out and when I went back out a few hours later when it was dark, my bright glowing nock was nowhere to be found. The next morning I found my arrow right out in the open where I had walked right past at dark and it wasn’t working. I picked it up and it would flicker. But not stay on. No damage whatsoever and it had not passed through the deer. It just wouldn’t stay on. Sometimes it did and sometimes it didn’t so I had one of the three still working. And it was one I hadn’t shot. I mean not to sound offended, but it’s a nock. It doesn’t require a users manual. I even bought the Nocturnal tool for turning them off. Maybe it was bad luck. But I sure won’t use them again. I think I speak for many when I say that when you have an equipment failure in a hunting situation that you tend to lose confidence in that piece of equipment. And I’ve not used Lumenoks yet. That’s one of the ones I was looking into. The NAP Thunderglo nocks I should’ve known better due to all the bad reviews. As far as an aider, I’m tending to lean towards an EWO sewn aider or the UltimAider. I wasn’t sure about the metal but I guess some hockey tape would help with that.

How do you like the Amsteel aider? Is it more difficult to use? Is there a big difference with stability? I’ll probably end up getting the UltimAider but haven’t ruled the Amsteel one out yet either

Has anyone replaced their standoffs on the Wingman with the EWO ones? It looks like it would maybe give another solid inch from the tree. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet. The ones on the Wingman are rotating so I’m guessing that would be the best option if replacing. Although DanO doesn’t offer the rotating ultralight ones in anodized. I guess my next question would be, would it be worth it to replace the tube with a Featherstick? All in all, I’m thinking I’d end up with basically an UOS with a Wingman platform on top.

Single stick user here and after a lot of trial and error I have a found a single step amsteel aider attached to the bottom of my climbing stick is the best option and most efficient for me personally. super light, dont have to worry about anything coming off or having to attach for the climb up/down. Going on 3rd year with this setup and dont plan on changing a thing.

EWO standoffs are the best IMO.

Yes go with the EWO standoffs they will give you a bit more room away from the tree and bite like a beaver (I believe is the new thing).

I made my own amsteel 2 step aider and it works great. Followed the tutorial video from a guy on this forum. Made soft shackles to attach the aider to the stick.

Good luck in your lighted nock search. In my experience they are all unreliable to varying degrees. I’m back to Nokturnals as they’ve been the best for me. Really wanted to like Glory Nocks but they were just bad. Half of them wouldn’t work out of the package or were barely lit.

The NAPs were hands down the worst I’ve ever tried. Poor fit, wouldn’t light, prone to breaking, etc. So much so that I sent multiple emails to customer service about it and they never bothered to respond.

That looks interesting. If you don’t mind me asking, why the platform on the bottom?

I don’t mind at all. Simply put it just works better for me and the way I’ve done it since I started with the scout.

For a more in depth answer there is a thread about it below. Several members weigh in on the pros and cons of top vs bottom.

Scout platform for one sticking.....top or bottom?

I went with a 5 step black diamond aider and cut the 5th step off, it gives a gracious plenty of boot room

Any trouble with foot placement on that? Easy to locate and get your boot in? What’s the distance per step? Thanks,
Matt

The steps are about 10-12 in apart, I use lacrosse size 10.5 and have no issues with getting my foot in the hole, ill send pics ltr tonight when I get home if you want

I use a 2 step Amsteel aider at 20" spacing on an 18" stick. I use both the Wingman and the UP platforms and can't tell enough noticeable difference to decide which I like better. I tried a 3 step UltiMaider but it was a bit heavier and bulkier than the Amsteel. Also, there was very little advantage to a 3 step aider after the first set on the tree. While climbing, the lowest step on a 2 step aider is about perfect for going up making the 3rd step somewhat useless. Maybe if I was able to set the stick higher or closer to the tether/quick link the third step would be helpful but as it is, with me setting the stick about a foot or so under the quick link, a 2 step works well. Although if your step spacing is significantly shorter on the aider, the 3rd step might be useful. Staggs in the Wild on YouTube has a great video showing the differences in a1,2, and 3 step aiders that might help your decision.

Also, I've used Nocturnals for years and yes on occasion, there might be a faulty one but I've had better luck with them than anything else.

I have a 15 inch EWO 1-stick with the sewn-in aider and love it. I think it's a 2 step
at 18 inches each. It's all I need. I do use the ultimaider pack n play to keep things tidy. lumenocks have been good to me but I haven't tried many.
Same. Mine is 17" between the "aider steps" though. Best investment I've ever made. I also have the ultimaider but haven't tried it yet. Trying to build another one stick with a shikar mini and a scout on the bottom of it.

Here is the pic of the stick and aider, black diamond brand, 1 in wide webbing, 12in from step to step

I've used this setup for 2 years so far and love it, I've been debating on cutting my lwcg ambush down in size some but haven't made my mind up yet, I have a hard time taking a bandsaw to something so pricy lmao
