If you haven’t, check out the video on G2 outdoors of Carl showing this technique. I personally use spikes to climb up and then repel down. 40’ of oplux, mad rock safeguard and you’re on your way. I would say use an oval locking carabiner to clip in around the tree. There’s some good info out there about regular carabiners not rated for side pressure.

Get on eastern woods outdoors and he has everything. Im using Madrock and canyon

8mm oplux with a figure 8 on a bite tied in, metal figure 8 with a prussic. I only got 30' of 8mm, if I did it again I would go 40'.

I have 39ft and im finding based off bow pull up rope that I'm about 25ft at eye level. Id rather carry the little extra than be short.

36’ of Sterling 9mm HTP. I started out rappelling using a figure-8 backed up with a Schwabisch hitch. Now I use the Mad Rock Safeguard as my attachment to the rope when in tether mode and as my rappel device when getting down. Love it.

Pro tip, you can always set a stick or platform while reppeling, throw a linemans belt on, pull your rope down to you, reset and reppel again. Done it twice, takes a bit longer but not a huge deal.

This sounds like an accident waiting to happen. It's entirely plausible someone will read your post and not know to put a stopper in their rappel rope

Yup, emergency use only, please remember while reppeling you should keep one hand on the rope below you and always use some sort of stopper knot near the bottom of your rope as well as a prussic.

Also, let's say you climbed too high by accident. Your rope gets you 10 feet off the ground. What is your method?

I carry 40-50ft when I rappel so it's a non-issue for me. Definitely a great idea for emergency use. I wanted to make sure the proper caveats are there for the casual reader who may not be aware of proper safety techniques and thinks this is the ultimate new minimalist technique to try.

Right on, adrenaline pumping a bit, just had 3 bucks in range, but the biggest one was only a 6 with broken tines and a limp so I'm hoping a bruiser is headed my way.

Good luck!

I have thrown a throwball over a crotch and started pulling my 35 feet of rope up. When the end of the rope was almost at the crotch my loop was just over my head. I realized I could not climb up if I could not reach the rope and could not hook my pull down line on if I could not climb up. I pulled the rope down and threw the throwball over a lower crotch instead. I now carry 50 feet of rope but have not needed it in the last dozen hunts.

I now keep my 50 feet of pull down paracord tied to my rope end loop at all times so now I could retrieve the rope if this happened with 35 feet of rope.
