One stick setup

Would you recommend changing the stand offs with EWO stand offs?

The Hawk standoffs seem to be fine just make sure the stick is set by pulling down on it before stepping on it. Awkward step angles might make a stick slip on the tree so make sure you're making a nice straight down step at not too awkward of an angle.

I decided that I hate having money and ordered the ultimate one stick from EWO. If I end up liking it I will have three hawk heliums and a cruzr seeker for sale

From everything I've looked at, that's the way to go. Buy once, cry once. I'll be doing the same at some point this summer.

I think you'll dig it. Eventually you can add a scout, monarch, or ultimate platform if ya like. I love one-sticking and for short sits under 4 hours I just stand on a slanted scout and add a couple squirrel steps. I'm mostly a leaner. It's nice to carry just 1 low profile stick.

What stick length and aider configuration did you settle on?

I got an 18” ultimate one stick with the flat UP platform and the sewn in 3 step aider. I went with the 18” since I was reading that it’s possible that your shin would hit the platform when climbing so to be safe I went with that length.

It was hard to drop that kind of money but I was thinking that I’ll probably go that route so like you said buy once cry once.

I hunt mostly private land but it’s really nice to be mobile and get into trees that a hang on stand wouldn’t work with. Also there are some thick areas on the property that bringing in my bow, pack w/ three 30” hawk sticks and a platform just isn’t ideal for.

My favorite part of the video is him saying," we can't hunt here in Sweden" and in the back ground 50 deer just laying there chewing cud. Lol

My $.02... if you're unsure about 1-sticking, and already have a stick, you can DIY up an aider and practice your technique with what you have, or a $15 River's Edge steel stick from Menards or Fleet Farm. Climb one or two moves up and take some practice shots at different angles. Having a purpose-built 1-stick with a cam cleat and platform will make you faster and more comfortable... but if you don't like it, or can't settle on a technique you like, having a purpose-built 1-stick setup isn't going to be magically better. Once you have a few dozen practice runs under your belt in a $ setup you'll have a better idea of what you need/want in a $$$ rig.

That is a great point and I probably should have been patient and tried it out before purchasing equipment to one stick

I ended up going all out and getting an EWO one stick. I figure I just won’t give myself the ability to not make it work. When I first started to saddle hunt it was not my jam but I was already financially invested so I just forced myself to keep practicing and eventually I really started to enjoy it

I used a set of hawk 20 inch sticks used them one year. They are to heavy for my liking, I left them hanging in the woods 2 years ago. I did a lot of research and bought the EWO Ultralight one stick the is 12 inches long, also added a 2 step aider that is 18 inches between steps. I wont use anything else.

Nice. Really looking forward to getting mine!

Idk if I made a mistake going with the 18” but we will see

Last year was my first year and I went all in on one-sticking. The EWO with UP was my favorite overall setup. Although I liked having a scout for shorter early season hunts or for when I was scouting and hanging cameras. I found a cheaper one-stick with some EWO and OOAL pieces that someone had built that I’ll keep the Scout on full-time so I have two separate options that are grab and go.
You won’t be sorry about your purchase. But like most of these things give yourself time to get used to it (namely the UP). I wasn’t sure I preferred it until I had half a season of jumping back and forth between it and the Scout. But if you have the chance to try out a flat and/or angled scout I would do so. Lightens your load even more (noticeable difference from UP) and some guys prefer those. Typical direction is angled for guys who lean more and flat for guys who sit more.

When researching one stick options, EWO was the favorite majority of the time.

I went with the flat just because I wanted a little bit more room for my feet. I figured if I don’t like it I can always switch out the platform and sell the flat UP. I do always have the option to take my platform as well and would have the ability to shoot all the way around a tree with the cruzr seeker and the UP.

A single step aider is all you need. Any more than that and you’re being inefficient and dramatically raising the “this ain’t for me” factor.

It’s easiest to use and it’s all that necessary. Use a single step to decide it one sticking is for you. That way you’re not tossing a perfectly viable climbing method because of the aider.

Gotcha. So would you still stick with a single aider even after getting used to one sticking?

I did because I don’t like an aider that much. My stick is a two step so I needed an aider, but I’m never more than a single step away from something solid.

The other thing to look at is you can only move your stick so far up the tree. Depending on your height you may not be able to move the stick high enough to make use of a lot of steps on your aider.

I have a 2 step aider and can't see the need for a third step. I could probably do it fine with a single step aider but I appreciate the second step later in the season when heavier or thicker clothing affect my mobility some.
