One stick vs 2TC vs Wild Edge

used wild edge for 3-4 years. knaider/swaider is dangerous, used it a lot (torn meniscus from it). 1stick/rappel is so much easier/safer/ lighter that it's not even close. 2TC? great option but I gotta stand on something when I get up there, so it solves no problem for me

I can get up a tree very quickly one sticking, usually 3 moves and I'm at 20+ but there's a chance I make noise hitting the carabiner or the madrock on the one stick.

I get up the tree a bit slower 2tc but there's zero chance of metal on metal noise. For this reason I've committed to the switch, and think I'll get a bit faster with more practice, though speed is rarely a top concern. The noise (or rather lack thereof) angle sold it for me.

Have never tried WE stepps, like @Cbigbear I'd just go back to my multi-stick setups instead.
Dutch and I are in the same boat but I’ve tried all three. WE steps felt too much like carrying around the kitchen sink. A benefit of one sticking is your platform is already attached so once you get to hanging height you just settle in. If you’re wanting uber lightweight can’t get any lighter than 2TC, if you’re wanting an all-in-one package one stick is the way to go. I’m gonna give 2TC another go after season.

This right here.

If you're a ROS hunter, fine. If not...there's no real weight saving. Yes, yes, there are other considerations besides weight.

Oddly, despite the above logic, the 2TC temptation (which is real for me) tempts me to use it in conjunction with a hang on. What chased me away from hang ons was un/packing and carrying sticks. 2TC would eliminate that mess. Though I suspect Sladder/rappel would be an even better hang on pairing for my climbing preferences.

They are great options with pros and cons for each. If you already have a saddle and a tether any kind of climbing stick, go ahead and try one sticking. You don’t need anything fancy to learn the moves. Want to try 2TC? Grab your tether and lineman’s belt and get to climbing. I borrowed a buddies WE Steps and they’re pretty cool. Once you get the knot down they do their job adequately. Try them all and keep your tree climbing arsenal diverse. If you hunt with a one stick with a small platform you can, one stick, 2TC, rope climb, and rappel. You already carry all the stuff you need. Different tools for different hunts. Don’t limit yourself.

I have not tried 2TC but may after this season if only to reduce noise. I swear, I cannot keep something metal from hitting something else metal while 1-stick climbing.

Rappelling down is too fun not to do though.

The Sladder or an etrier looks like a really cool option too.

EDIT: something like this could basically function as a 'sladder', no? Just tie, climb, then flip and attach at opposite end?https://pmirope.com/product/pmi-6-step-etrier/

My go-to is 1-sticking. I keep trying SRT and 2TC but my technique isn't there yet. I did get to hunting height with 2TC but it took more time and effort than it should have. My fault, I let a hand injury keep me from practicing this summer.

I think im the only one that doesnt like climbing on pure aiders on this forum lol. The Sladder(while a great idea) is definitely not for me lol.

Wild edge steps are not it. knaider and swaider were a great idea it does work but it sucks IMO.

2TC is slow but efficient. no noise but takes practice.

One sticking you still need an aider which I dislike but its but far the easiest when not just packing in normal sticks.

I tried them all. 2TC is what I would go with, but I ended up with four Tethrd one sticks and a moveable aider that stays on my foot.

It literally is all about personal preference! Since I started saddle hunting I've been using 90% WEI Stepps with a K/S, deadly effective with minimal weight and bulk, but takes practice and attention to detail. This season the Sladder has stolen me away from the WEI Stepps! I personally have tried stirrup climbing, sticks, sticks with aiders, 2TC, and others. Personal preference and I keep that knowledge in my arsenal, but if I don't know where I'm gonna end up, it's gonna be the Sladder this year (last year would've been WEI). I also currently SRT a portion of the time (my favorite), but not a high percentage.
