Is the OnX app worth the purchase? I’ll be hunting in 2 states this year and was curious. If not, which app would you all recommend?

I like it a lot. Lots of features and they are very receptive to user feedback to improve the app. They have a place to leave suggestions and I have seen them bring to the app suggestions I (probably with many others) haven submitted. There are several out there that will do the job though. Most give some type of free trial. Test it out and see what you like.

I use mine all the time.

You could also look up the county your looking at GIS map. You can get a lot of good info for free if they have that available.

I think it is absolutely, I look up friends to see how much land they really own...lol. Also before you purchase look on camofire.com and you can get a big discount for it.

It is no doubt worth it! I love scouting a new property with it: I can track my mileage for one; if I find deer trails, I will walk down them to find crossings etc and with the tracking function it now shows me where all the deer trails are on the property. Every time I see something, I drop a pin there (rub, scrape, food source, water source). I mark all my trail cam locations so I don't lose them. Also it's awesome to look at all the stuff I marked with my phone on a full size screen on my computer when I get back home (just hit refresh and it automatically updates with the info you logged on your phone). It helps with the big picture on a new property. I have buddies who use Hunt Stand and like it; but with my limited use of it, it seems clunky. Here is one I scouted yesterday.

Another great resource is CalTopo. It has some great topo maps, slope angle shading, and hybrid overlays. Not as user-friendly as OnX but more technical and detailed. I use it on my desktop, I have not seen an iPhone app yet. I have heard they have an android app.

I use it on public grou.d for years now.. mark all your stands no tacks for everyone else to see shows private boundries too map I love it. U can even use it with no signal

I use hunt stand because the areas I hunt don’t update property lines and ownership enough to warrant the extra features of a paid membership. When I go out west I use onx but I don’t get to go often so only purchase them for the years I go.

I don't suspect anyone who's paid for OnX will give you a bad review of it. I use Gaia instead - at $36/year for premium (nation wide, including property lines and owner info) it's a lot cheaper for multiple state usage, and has the same features (and more). But it's target audience is hikers, not hunters, so you have to "make do" with some of it's presentation stuff not being fine-tuned for "us". It's still entirely capable and way more flexible, just takes some configuring first. There's a SIX MONTH trial available for it - https://www.gaiagps.com/premium/?PROMO=BIKEPACKING

I use the free version because the section of AR that I hunt didn’t have any land information. I didn’t see the reason in paying for it. I do get a lot of use out of the freebie. Camofire has discounts from time to time. The Hunting Public YouTube channel advertises code THP to get you 20% off I believe.

I will use Caltopo/Google Earth for my detailed cyber scouting and then I will move into OnX on my desktop to start marking areas. After I do that it is synced to the app on my phone and I download that area for offline use and it's time for boots on the ground. That method seems to work best for me!
