Opinions on Boots

I plan on hunting on a ring of steps. I’m curious about what y’all are using for boots? Rubber (LaCross etc) or hard bottom (Danner etc). I’m going to be hunting all season in central and southeastern Ohio. I’m looking for insulated styles please.

I'd recommend a mountaineering boot. I wear uninsulated asolo boots. They have a steel bar that keeps them stiff so standing mid sole on a ROS doesnt fatigue my feet. As far as insulating, I just use the boot covers on the cold days, which in Ga we dont have very many.

I just bought a pair of lacrosse alpha burly pro specifically because they're hard-bottomed rubber boots. I'd try a pair on and check out the firmness of the sole for your use.

I use zamberlan wasach boots for marking timber 40+ a week and wildland fire and love them. I am a large guy with bad ankles from work. I was hesitant to ever try rubber boots. Last year I got the lacrosse aeroheads and ended up loving them. They are durable and I havent felt under protected from ankle roll in them and I have hiked some steep rocky stuff. They are no problem on sticks and ROS as well.

I’ll second the mountaineering boot idea. Any amount of time balancing body weight on a tiny surface area will fatigue your feet, so unless you are a full-time sitter it will affect your long-term comfort. Rigid, stiffened lasts in mountain boots will help distribute your weight better across the footbed, whether you perch on the balls of your feet, arches, or heels.

I wear Zamberlan & Crispi, and you could never convince me that the dollars spent aren’t some of the best dollars ever spent with respect to forgetting about my feet. Buy once, cry once.

Used to only use Lacrosse Alpha Burly Pro's however the bottom of the boot is not rigid enough for my feet for all day sits on my platform or ring of steps. Switch to my Lowa boots I use out west and my feet are many times happier.

I've got a lot of boots and my favorites for regular weather from 30 degrees and up are Mucks or Dry Shod. For extreme cold I wear Baffin Titan pack boots. Never had an issue with my feet because I'm typically in more of a sitting position when hunting. All the YouTube stuff out there with guys standing straight up is not correct for a long term hunt. Most of your weight should be in the seat with knees bent about 30 to 45 degrees.

Love my Lowa Tibets! They are more of a backapacking/mountaineering boot with stiff soles. If I’m not wearing these, I’m wearing my muck boots which I also love. Like John E said above, if you’re utilizing a ROS correctly, you shouldn’t experience much foot discomfort from the steps...that is of course assuming your’e not up there in crocs or sneakers lol

I have muck shadow pursuits and I really like them. They are rubber and neoprene and have a flat bottom. I can walk quietly and they are pretty comfortable

18" Lacrosse, Danner, Cabela's hip boots and Keen. All are quality footwear and I use them all depending on the situation. Money well spent.

I use ROS and the alphaburly pros are plenty comfortable. I have a lighter pair of xtratuf rubber boots and they are less stiff and less comfortable but still doable. Definitely once you get your tether/harness/knee pad setup dialed the weight distribution should allow you to wear anything.

For the money, Salomon Quest 4Ds are real nice until it gets cold, have heard good things about Keens.
