OTC DIY Climbing sticks?

Has anyone built climbing sticks entirely from parts purchased at a hardware store over the counter? If so could you post some pics of parts and sticks?

Trying to get some ideas and need something to do. Or if there is a thread like this already please shoot me the link. Not trying to do any welding, just some cutting and drilling then bolting it all together.

If you are going to use u-bolts get them in steel, not stainless steel. I had one snap off due to tightening.

You should really inspect your ropes and saddle well before you start up a tree.

Have done some idea mock ups with aluminum parts from Lowes. I would not climb on it. Too thin and too soft.

Yeah I’m concerned about that as well. Got parts for my ideal 1 stick coming from guys on here and DanO but I was curious if it could be done. The more I look around hardware stores the more I think the only part you can save on would be the 1” aluminum square pipe. The rest I don’t think I would go cheap on.

I wouldn't even skimp on 1" tube myself. Here is a quick comparison of the strength properties. 6063-T5 (Lowe's) 6061-T6 (@DanO )

In Layman's terms, its strong, but not as strong what most folks use for their sticks.

I used the square tubing from Lowes but encased it in aluminum angle on opposite corners for a double thickness of aluminum. I built a platform post with it. I haven't tried making climbing sticks this way.

Where in upstate NY are you? Western? Otsego county, Oneonta/Cooperstown area, pretty much center of the state.

Thanks, I’ll check it out. I found 3’ of 1” square steel pipe for $6 yesterday. I’m going to try that out and see how well it works.

Our local metal distributor sells 6061 for $2.40 a pound. Look in to someone local it will be much cheaper.

I purchased the standoffs from Dano and the rest of the materials for fie sticks was less than $60.

I think I’ll be going that same route when I build a set. I got some parts from EWO coming for my ideal 1 stick attempt but plan to build full sticks in the future.

3/8" x 2" 6061 flat stock cut to 9". Measued down 1/2" and marked out the 1/4" holes 1/2" apart. I cut through the center of the holes on a verticle band saw with a gate. I the measured 1/2" down on each end and 1/2" from the center on the bottom and cut along that line for the taper. I used a mill to cut the slot for attaching to the stick.
