Out On A Limb Ridge Runner Platform - Warning

He had the strap over a year. I doubt covid had anything to do with it, sometimes things just make it though the system.
We have nearly as many quality/ testing employees as we do machine operators and we still get customer complaints/ returns. totally unexplained as to how it made it out of the factory but yet there it is in a customers hands

Gotcha. I just assumed since he said it was brand new that he just got it somewhat recently. I might have missed the part about it sitting a year.

Yep understand the quality thing too. Same story at my company. Despite your best efforts things do just happen.

From my reading on how climbing slings are sewn and why, I think multiple rows of bar tacks perpendicular to the line of force would be stronger. I'll try to find it, but a sailing website strength tested hand sewn webbing and compared various stitches and then tested them to failure. That site and a few others on rock climbing were my sources when I did some recent sewing (hand sewing bar tacks take forever).

That's one of the problems with 1 inch webbing. There is just not enough real estate to make a lot of stitches. I would not use that strap as my only support. It looks like there are 51 stitches in the "Z" . According to the Sailrite formula with V69 polyester thread it should break at 688 lbs. It is a 2:1 pulley situation with the strap folded over so double that. With camming leverage you maybe could break that. Especially if the stitches are not wonderful. If the thread is thicker it would be more.

That platform lever system has a lot of mechanical advantage on that strap.

If it sat inside out of the sun it should be as strong as a year ago.

I agree. I was referencing more about the issue coming up now as opposed to a year ago. Based on his photos I assumed it had been inside still in a package or something for a year.

It was inside of the original box unused in a closet with the rest of my hunting gear until a couple weeks ago. I was only able to get it out and practice twice. Definitely didn’t sit in the elements fellas. :)

I have a love / hate relationship with these safety related posts. Love that there is full transparency happening and we all have an opportunity to learn from everyone of them and hate that more people seem to be having close calls lately. Some stats from a 2018 real tree.com article on hunting fall accidents (not saddle specific):
23% occur while ascending
15% occur while transitioning to/from the platform
40% occur while on-stand
22% while descending

Top 5 primary reasons:
28% slipping or losing grip
16% strap break
11% human error
8% stand break
7% step / ladder failure

Bottom line, accidents can happen at any time and equipment inherently can fail.

Yeah for sure. Always glad when people chime in about safety here. We’re all so excited about all this stuff and I think it’s easy to overlook safety sometimes.

That’s good they’re replacing it. Good reflection on them. They will hopefully get credit for the obvious defective product. Yeah that is good they want to investigate. Shows they actually care about their customers.
