This is my third season in a saddle and the last two seasons I’ve had a rough go at killing a buck. In 2020 I shot at a very nice 4+ year old buck only to hit a branch which ended up deflecting my arrow and only grazed the bucks brisket. Last year I had another very nice buck come into 30 yards trailing a doe. One of those nothing.. nothing.. then hurry up and shoot deals. I rushed the shot and hit high shoulder. There was a light blood trail for a few hundred yards then nothing. I was sick and my confidence was low.

This season I needed redemption and needed to make it happen early since my second son will be born in November! I got permission on this piece last year, which is a special regs wmu 2B, so the season starts two weeks earlier than the rest of the state. I didn’t hunt it much last year but I did bump a small buck last year on my way in for an evening hunt.

Back in August I decided to make a quick scout and toss a camera up. I got to the same area where I had bumped that buck last year and once again bumped another deer. I didn’t see what it was, but it sure sounded big thrashing out of there.

On Saturday with a good wind I decided to setup within 100 yards across a small grown over field. I was tucked back 25 yards or so, two sticks high, about 12ft or so. A half hour before legal I had three bucks come within 25 yards of me. I drew back one the bigger buck. I needed him to take one more step. Unfortunately, he locked up as he caught my ground scent and he backed out.

We can’t hunt Sunday’s here, bummer, one day…So Monday evening it was. I figured what the heck, throw another hunt at it, you didn’t mess him up too bad. Once again, right before legal, this buck showed up again. He worked his way to 10 yards from me. Using the tree as a blocker I sat patiently waiting for my shot. Now this area is super thick. I knew I’d have a small window to shoot through.

He turned just barely broadside and I slipped a shot off right over the top of the brush. He kicked, ran 15 yards, and stopped like he didn’t know what happened then tipped right over! I’m super happy, he’s not my biggest but I’ll take it. The black hornet did not disappoint.97817E62-063C-45C3-A181-B49A9AD0B084.jpeg

Congratulations on a great bucks and you drained that femoral artery…
I really wish they would open the whole state instead of just doing 2B, it’s just not fare to the rest us is guys:sob:

I think they have longer seasons here since it’s mostly the suburbs. Way more deer here than the big woods I hunt.

Fun fact. Count backwards from a November b-day and you land on Valentines Day. Apparently she liked the chocolates.
lol. Ive got 2 in November. One the 18 one the 19. My bday February 17. Count up 9 months 1 day and 2 days. Let’s just say I had sworn off the month of Feb till wife had surgery. Least it was the short month.
