Packable down jacket

Holler at me if your not a member, I looked & there is a deal order 2 outerwear items & save 10$ I’ll order one for that price......

I have that kuiu down jacket, that is the warmest most packable jacket I have, the big issue with it, is that it is so loud,
you can't move an inch with out it letting every deer within a mile know your there.
I mean the loudest thing I've ever worn, great if you are glassing in the west at the next mountain for 6 hrs,
but that thing can not be worn in a tree stand, with anything close by

I even tried putting a merino wool pullover over it, and it is still loud, crazy amount of money and I may use it duck hunting only.
did I say loud!!!

I'll second the Outdoor Research Transcendent down jacket w/o hood. It is my first down jacket and I'm kind of dissapointed in myself for not trying them before. It has a double sided zipper on one of the side pockets to make it into a stuff sack for packing which works great. Very warm and lightweight.

I recently bought a heavier fill jacket from a member here and it will definitely be in my pack for the late season. That one is made by Plythal and it feels great.

From what I've read and it makes sense is to be sure you have enough room in your outer layer of clothing to let the down puff up a bit otherwise it's not going to be as effective. When I was shopping for a new pair of bibs and a jacket this year at Scheels I found a puffy similar to what the OR one is I bought and tried it one under the jackets to make sure it would work as a combo.

Oh and I had one of the Gerry ones at Costco in my cart a couple weeks ago but ended up putting it back on the shelf since I had just bought two other ones and didn't think I needed a third. It felt nice and should do the trick if you're looking to try them out. I'm 5'7" and 190 lbs and the large seemed to fit me well.

It's not down, but i wear the Carrhart Gilliam Jacket under my camo hoodie1605625956433.png

Those look nice. But I'll be honest and don't know what I would ever use them for other than maybe walking around pushing the stroller.

That's wild. My Sierra Design down puffy is a hiking brand with the typical nylon shell. If I put it on over a quiet layer (polypro base) and under a quiet layer (fleece jacket, etc), it might make a little noise but not enough to alert a deer. The jacket collar is right by my ears, so 20 yards away is way quieter (sound dropping away with the division of the distance squared).

So I decided on the Gerry jacket. Hard to beat for the price. I figure if I’m not happy with it I can always pay more for one of the more premiums down the road. Paid $23 on eBay for brand new with tags...for the first one. Had it shipped to my daughters house because that’s where I do most of my hunting from. It arrives along with another package and she sits the jacket package on top of the larger box NEXT TO HER DOGS CAGE as she leaves for work. Needless to say, the dog was obviously interested in what was inside and managed to pull the corner into her cage and chew a six inch hole in the middle of the back. All I could think of is thank God I didn’t drop a lot more money on my first one. Anyways, was able to find another brand new with tags one on eBay again for $25 this time. I don’t have any experience with any of the more expensive ones but surely seems like it’ll do the trick. Maybe down the road I’ll end up purchasing one of the 800+ fill ones. I guess I can justify a second or third purchase and chalk it up to saddle hunting. Lol
