PassThrough/Kangaroo Pockets in a Saddle

I was wondering if coats/jackets/anoraks/hoodies like the sitka fanatic, nomad cottonwood, and kings wind defender xkg allow for their kangaroo/passthrough pockets in the front to be used while in the saddle. Do the bridge loops/bridge get in the way of using this pocket in place of a handwarmer muff? Are they blocked? Does one brand have a better pocket placement than another? As you can tell, I've been camo shopping!! Thanks for the help.

The kings camo wind defender anorak has zippers along the side of the torso that I believe you’d be able to run your bridge through. I’ve had the jacket for a year and love it, just haven’t needed to use it in the saddle yet to know if it works like I’m thinking.

Do you want to use your kangaroo pocket to hold gear, or keep your hands warm? Generic hoodies work great as handwarmers but I've had more success moving small gear (phones, etc.) to my bino pack or turkey vest. I think the Asbell pocket is a bit higher on the torso, and it looks like it should work great.

I have no issues with sitka fanatic when leaning. If I'm sitting, then it's a little harder, but I go below bridge loops in that situation.

I have an Asbell Pathfinder and the King's anorak. The King's has worked the best for me in the saddle. The side zipper work so you can unzip some and tuck the front and the back so the bridge is in the slits. The kangaroo pocket is high enough to get hands in above my bridge (but I still love a muff better). It's a very warm piece, and I was toasty for a long sit last weekend in the 20s with high winds. My only complaint is the sleeve cuffs are a little tight for my liking.

The kings is awesome for warmth. But the passthroughs could be made better and in a different location. I may also alter the functionality of the zippers on mine to allow the bridges to be "passed through"s without unhooking a side

Thanks! The kings anorak is one I have been looking at, along with the nomad cottonwood. I appreciate the info!

I want to use the kangaroo as a hand warmer. not really for gear. Good tip on the asbell. Thanks!

I hung a handwarmer muff from my bino pack this season. Worked great in Northern MN cold, not sure how much warmth you need where you are.

Kifaru Lost Park Parka is designed to put your pack strap through the pocket. I would think it would be fine for a saddle.

Thanks @GCTerpfan. Yes, I own both. Had the Cottonwood for years and bought the XKG for this year. The XKG Anorak is superior... love the zips on both sides as opposed to the single zip on the Cottonwood. Double breaat pockets on the XKG are nice for a lefty. Also, the Anorak is sherpa lined on the inside and has a soft shell on the outside whereas the Cottonwood is high-pill on the outside and shell-ish on the inside. Had to wear a couple layers under the Nomad but only one 150g merino layer under the XKG enabled me to stay out in 27 degree weather.

WOW! GREAT feedback! Thank you so much! I have not yet had my hands on the cottonwood, but was very curious about it. How about the location of the xkg pockets? Can they front pocket be used as a handwarmer pocket with a saddle on? I"ll be using it in temps from 30, down to single digits. Thanks for the detailed description!

The answer I'll give is probably. The reason I can't give a definite is because by the time it gets cold enough to break out the big jackets, we're already wearing orange vests over top of everything. I do recall sitting in the saddle and zipping the sides down as far as they would go (from my chest area until it abutted my bridge) and still being warm. Kind of had the front section laying in my lap like a skirt if you can imagine that. You won't be able to use the zips on the sides as a pass-through for your bridge unless your bridge is openable on one side (think zip both sides down all the way chest to waist, zip the second set of zippers down to the meet the first set, pass your bridge through the hole that is now available, and finally zip the second set of zips back up toward your chest a bit). Conversly, you can't do either of those things in the Cottonwood.

How big a boy are you? What size jacket do you wear?

I'm really appreciating your feedback here. it is helping me decide where to spend my money!! i'm 6'1, 215ish. not a tiny guy, and i have more of a gut than i should. i usually wear an XL jacket.

one of my main reasons for looking at these two pieces is the desire to leave the hand warming muff at home and use the pocket on the jacket. I usually end up wearing my warmest coat for the last week or 2 of archery here in PA, and then again for the late archery season through mid jan. i've also been looking at the matching bib to go with the anorak. i'm not as interested in the cottonwood pants. I would really like to find a quiet, warm bib for the late season also.

Then the Anorak and pants are for you. You hadn't previously mentioned the pants. They are great. Again, sherpa lined and soft shell outer. The pockets are placed well on the thighs for access in a saddle.

No issues using the kangaroo pocket on my Fanatic set. You can’t really reach the zipper hip pockets on the bibs though, not a big deal I just put my keys/wallet/Garmin Messenger in those. Phone goes in a thigh pocket until I’m hunting height.
