For the last few years I've been looking for a change for gun season. Bow hunting gives me a great sense of accomplishment, rifle hunting does not.

A few weeks ago it hit me that maybe I need top try out hunting with a pistol. I'm not talking about a cut down rifle with a scope, I want open sites and a revolver. Anyone pistol hunt?

I got my first one with a pistol this year. Just ate him last night. I used a Glock 40 long slide 10mm with a red dot.

I've used my Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Mag with iron sights. As my eyes continue aging though, I find I prefer optics on any firearm I shoot.

I did it for several years and want to get back into it. It definitely made shooting does more fun. I’ve used revolvers, cut down rifles, and a Glock in 10mm. The 10mm doesn’t always leave the best blood trail but it is effective to over 50 yards which is about my limitation with an open sighted handgun. It’s definitely the most fun to practice with and a Glock is lighter and more compact than about anything else for deer hunting. If you want to stick to a wheel gun and don’t reload it’s tough to be a 44 mag for performance and availability of ammo. Ear muffs are important even when only firing one shot in a hunting scenario.

An ultra dot 30 is about 225 new and is about the least and most I would spend on an optic for a wheel gun.

I ordered a 44 mag last week. I thought about going with my 1911 to get my feet wet but something about the revolvers is calling my name.

44 mag Ruger Super Redhawk. All I've used for 5 years. Built a hand warmer / holster this year out of an old vest and absolutely loved it! Will be building a real one this spring!

My next hunting gun purchase will be a 5” S&W model 69. It’s a smaller 5 shot 44 mag. They are a handful with full house loads but I’ll handload just above 44 special power and still be able to carry full power loads for bear backup.

I agree, I only hunted 5 days of our 15 day rifle season this year and three of those were with the pistol. I just don't get the charge from rifle hunting anymore like I do with archery. It was kind of like a break in the middle of the deer season for me this year.

I use a Ruger Redhawk in .44 Mag with a 4x scope (my eyes aren't what they used to be for iron sights). I am seriously looking for a 2x scope though or considering one of my old red dot 1x scopes. The 4x is just too much on the handgun, every waiver is amplified 4 times.

Thanks for the responses. I debated going full season with just the bow, debated going muzzleloader. But a pistol won.

Once it arrives I'll have to start figuring out holsters.

Have you killed anything with it yet? I have the same gun setup full of double tap ammo and have yet to get a shot with it yet.

Yes sir...I shot a little meat deer at the end of the season at about 40 yards, right in the boiler room, through and through, dead in 30 yards. I'm running a leupold delta point and XTP hand loads.

I shoot .45 colt SA iron sight, i missed a red fox earlier in the season with it, but it was sure fun and easier to maneuver around with then a rifle.

Even though I'm not a serious gun hunter. This the first year I'm pumped up about heading out with the pistol.

Sometimes I will take my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter (44 mag - 7 inch barrel) out, never dedicated a whole season, never had a shot with it yet.
Maybe this is the year to try with the saddle.
