Post season workout encouragement thread! 2022 EDITION!!!!!

If you’re game to do it, then I am too. This might be pretty far out but the weekend of June 20th would be my tentative race day. I haven’t run 10 miles since the summer of 05/06 so hopefully I’m not getting in over my head. Pencil me in haha!
I’d be down for a saddle-hunter half marathon as well! Lemme know what day or weekend and I’m down. Got my first trail race of the year this next weekend and it may be my only if the spring b/c most others have been cancelled, so I’m always down for a race!

I’m personally shooting for June 20th as a tentative date. Probably do some sort of honor system sort of thing.

Right on.
Just lemme know

I'm assuming we're all doing our own virtual/DIY thing, so no need for us to all plan on the exact same day (in my opinion). Why dont we set the second half of June as the target "date range" for our inaugeral saddlehunter half. Wednesday June 16-Wednesday june 30th. We can tighten down the window if wanted, but this gives us some flexibility with family and weather issues. I'll plan for the 20th myself as well for a target date, this gives us 19 weeks to train, there's a lot of 16 and 20 week free training plans out there if you're interested in joining, runners world and Hal Higdon have a few pretty good plans for all ability levels. (of note: they also have full marathon plans). Jeff Galloway also has some good plans if you prefer the run/walk combo (I dont know much about them, I'm a runner not a run/walker).

I've been using the free version of Strava off and on, seems to be OK for tracking, i just haven't been diligent enough with doing so but planning to turn that around so i'll plan to use that and post a screenshot afterwards.

I've dusted off the old treadmill and finally jumped back on it for a quick 2.5 miles last night- nothing special, around 10:40/mile pace. Felt better than I expected to after this long of a hiatus so will be continuing/ ramping up mileage as quickly as my body allows. Likely doing a few more tonight, and then tomorrow I'll be "crosstraining" by taking my hobie outback out for a peddle to see if i can find any winter catfish that want to come home to lake crisco.

I’m glad there’s one organized person on this board haha!

Sounds good to me! Where are y’all located? I’m in western KY. I would possibly be open to driving an hour or two to meet and run.
And I’d definitely recommend a plan, or at least building your base up first before trying to increase speed.

I'm in Maryland just north of DC so unfortunately a bit to far to drive for this. But it would be cool to meet up for a real road race in the future at some point. Perhaps that can be the second annual.

Also: if anyone is scared off by the half marathon distance but wants in on the friendly competition/encouragement, a lot of "real" races have 5k (3.1 miles) events on the same day so if you're in for that distance, let's do this thing!

Welp my hunting season is all over, the holidays are over, there’s not a lot of parties going on with friends and my gym is closing and it’s the season of New Years resolutions.

I’m personally battling the “Covid 19 lbs” AND I’m violently fighting off this thing that comes with being a new Dad, the Dad bod. Not to mention all the Christmas candy and beer I’d been pounding down. I’m 32 next month, I have a thin build(About 6’1, 170) but am just wildly out of shape.
Time to dust off the old Insanity DVD’s and do the damage! There literally isn’t a better time to get into shape than now. I have one DVD set that I bought years ago that I didn’t even start. So my goal is to do the regular insanity 60 days and then do this 30 day “Asylum” DVD that I never used. Then alternate the two and maybe add in some running and other stuff too(hopefully hockey when the rinks open back up).
So whatever workout you choose, I want to wish everyone good luck. Let’s encourage each other through these dark winter months and roll into spring scouting healthy and ready to look for that coveted big buck.
Yup! I’m your size 6’ 172lbs. Course I’m 58 not 32. My alternating daily is a 1.5 mile run on the treadmill, then weights or 2.0 walk at 15 degree incline with a 30lb pack on my back, then weights. Averaging about 7,000 steps a day. I used to drink 1-3 Coke Zeros a day....haven’t had one in a month. When deer season comes this year, I want to be able to go far, hard and long.

Working out is for ***** willows. Just get a farm job or cut wood all day and you'll be in saddle shape. Just kidding.... No I agree, I have been on a mission since late last August to lose weight via Carnivore/Keto type diets where you stop consuming carbs and sugar. It has worked immensely I've lost probably 40 lbs. I have about 10 more lbs to get to my 175lb goal. I'm about 69" and my fitness level has increased greatly just by my diet. This deer season I was way more mobile because of my weight loss and I certainly want to keep that rhythm going for saddle hunting and for my over all better health. My problem is I have a desk job but I do have a pretty physical home life doing firewood, trapping, hunting etc. helping on my brother in laws farm sometimes etc. I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee about 5 years ago due to a torn meniscus. They told me not to run anymore do things like biking and swimming etc. so I'm not pounding on my knee. So my knee does begin to ache during hunting season especially if I really pounded on it due to just the climbing, walking, carrying heavier loads on uneven ground, dragging and pulling deer etc. So in answer to your question about my #1 Fitness goal, would be to lose weight to my target weight and then maintain that weight without the types and kinds of workouts that pound on my knees but aren't boring things like gym stints and wussy stuff like that. Sorry guys going to the gym just isn't me.
Tore my knee up a little back in 2008. Doc recommended surgery but I was in the Navy, in Command and getting ready for cruise so I blew it off. Was subsequently stationed in Colorado Springs and started climbing those 14,000 foot peaks (there’s 53 of them). That knee gave me fits when I started but after about 5 or 6 it stopped hurting so much, and by the time I polished off 21 more it didn’t hurt at all. Now 12 years later at 58 it’s started hurting again because I have fallen out of shape. The key is to strengthen the supporting structure of the knee. Put on a pack and start hiking and I think you will see improvement. Nothing like some post season scouting!

pretty sure I can't do a half marathon but I'm following along and running every few days. Setting a goal to do a 5k by 6/20 under 30 min.

Is there a biking equivalent? I always wanted to work up to a century ride(100 miles in a day) but never have...
Yeah it’s basically whatever goal you choose. I figured this was a good way to have accountability while we do offseason workouts.

I did another 3 miles on the treadmill tonight- wish I could be out on the road but the kids that can't be home alone at this age so, treadmill it is for some of my training days. I'll do the "race" on the roads, while I've been doing a 1% incline to equal out effort, I still dont trust that the treadmill isn't easier than running outside. Better than nothing though!

Hows it going for you guys, other than contributing to the super bowl chicken wing shortage?

I ate a bunch of wings and I limited myself to 2 beers. We’ll see how I do this morning. I’m on the first day of month 2 for Insanity. From what I remember, these month 2 workouts are very tough.

I have been doing tough mudder and Sparton races. This year I’m doing the Murph challenge.
1 mile run to start
100 pull ups
200 push ups
300 air squats
1 mile run to finish
You can do it with or with out a 20 pound vest. I’m preparing to do it with the vest by loosing 25 pounds body weight, keto is working. The Murph challenge is on memorial day weekend, you could do it anywhere, virtual or different organizations around your state might have scheduled. Check it out on Instagram. Keep hammering
